The 25-year-old midfielder has signed a five-year contract with City that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2031, ending his spell at Chelsea and adding further depth and experience to Pep Guardiola’s midfield.
Fernández arrives in Manchester with an impressive international résumé. The Argentina international was part of the team that won the 2022 FIFA World Cup and also lifted the 2024 Copa América. He said he was determined to continue collecting major honours with his new club.

Sánchez heads to Italy
Chelsea were also active in the final hours of the window, with goalkeeper Robert Sánchez completing a season-long loan move to Serie A side Como.
Sánchez made 112 appearances for Chelsea after joining the London club from Brighton and Hove Albion in August 2023. During his time at Stamford Bridge, he was part of the squads that won the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup.
His move to Italy provides the goalkeeper with an opportunity for regular first-team football while bringing a new chapter to his Chelsea career.
Mudryk reunites with De Zerbi
Ukraine international Mykhailo Mudryk also secured a season-long loan move and will reunite with Roberto De Zerbi, the coach he previously worked under.
Mudryk said the prospect of working with De Zerbi again was a major attraction.
“It’s a great feeling. I can’t wait to start training and playing for the Club, and I’m so excited to be reunited with Roberto De Zerbi,” Mudryk said.
“I’m a player who brings speed and creativity, and I want to help in both the offensive and defensive areas. I want to make the fans excited.”
De Zerbi, meanwhile, said he was confident the Ukrainian forward could make a difference.
“Having worked with Misha earlier in his career, I know exactly what he can bring to our team,” De Zerbi said.
“He has the quality to change a game with his speed and ability in one-vs-one situations, and is an exciting, attacking talent.”
Fofana joins Sunderland
Sunderland strengthened their squad with the signing of Belgian winger Malick Fofana from Olympique Lyonnais on a long-term contract.
The 21-year-old becomes Sunderland’s fifth signing of the summer window after making 82 appearances for Lyon, scoring 18 goals and contributing six assists.
Sunderland director of football Florent Ghisolfi said the club believed the young winger had the qualities required to succeed in England’s top flight.
“Malick has all the attributes to thrive in the Premier League.
“He is a player with huge potential and Sunderland AFC will provide him with the right environment to continue to develop and prosper.”
Timber signs for Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace also confirmed the arrival of Netherlands international Quinten Timber on a contract running until 2031.
The 25-year-old midfielder, who has earned 13 caps for the Netherlands, joins Palace after spells with Marseille and Feyenoord.
Palace chairman Steve Parish backed Timber to make his mark in the Premier League, pointing to his experience at both club and international level.

Grealish returns to Everton
Manchester City forward Jack Grealish also secured a return to Everton on loan for the remainder of the 2026/27 season.
The 30-year-old England international spent the previous campaign at the Merseyside club, making 20 Premier League appearances and recording two goals and six assists before a foot injury in February brought his season to an early conclusion.
Grealish said the positive relationship he developed with the club's manager, teammates and supporters played a major role in his decision to return.
