Nigeria’s Flamingos have been crowned champions of the 2026 WAFU B U-17 Women’s Tournament after completing a flawless campaign with a commanding 4-0 victory over Togo on the final day of the regional championship.

The triumph saw Nigeria finish the six-nation tournament with a perfect five wins from five matches, becoming the first team to achieve a 100 per cent record in the competition since its inception.

The victory also saw the Flamingos wrest the title from Ghana, winners of the maiden edition in 2024, as Nigeria established itself as the new champions of the regional age-grade competition.

Harmony Chidera was at the centre of Nigeria’s emphatic final-day performance, scoring twice from the penalty spot, while Umejiaku Oluebube and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi added the other goals.

The Flamingos took control of the encounter early, with Chidera converting her first penalty in the 15th minute after Adegbuyi was brought down inside the box.

Nigeria continued to dominate and was awarded another penalty 20 minutes later after Adegbuyi was again fouled.

Chidera stepped forward once more and made no mistake, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to double Nigeria’s advantage in the 35th minute.

The two-goal cushion allowed the Flamingos to control the match after the interval, with Togo struggling to contain Nigeria’s attacking pressure.

The third goal arrived in the 67th minute in unusual fashion when Oluebube sent what appeared to be a harmless cross from the wing towards the Togo goal.

Instead of finding a teammate, the ball sailed over the goalkeeper and into the top corner of the net, giving Nigeria a 3-0 lead.

Adegbuyi, who had played a key role in winning both penalties, eventually got her name on the scoresheet in the 90th minute to complete the emphatic victory.

The result gave Nigeria 15 points from five matches and a six-point advantage over Ghana, who faced hosts Ivory Coast in their final fixture of the tournament.

The Flamingos’ campaign was marked by consistency and attacking efficiency, with the team winning every match on their way to the championship.

The title also provides an important boost for the young Nigerian side as preparations continue for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

The global tournament is scheduled to take place from October 17 to November 7, giving the Flamingos another opportunity to test themselves against the best young teams from around the world.

Having completed their regional campaign without dropping a point, the Nigerian youngsters will now turn their attention to the final phase of preparations for the World Cup, with the WAFU B triumph providing additional momentum ahead of the global competition.
