FOLA is stepping into the next phase of his career with the release of his sophomore album, ‘9,’ scheduled for October 9.
The timing is deliberate. So is the title.
For an artist who has spent the past two years steadily establishing himself in Nigeria’s music scene, ‘9’ appears to be a statement of intent: a project built around scoring, impact and the expectation of delivering when it matters.
In announcing the album on Instagram, FOLA explained the meaning behind the title, drawing a parallel between music and football. The number nine represents the striker — the player expected to finish chances and get on the scoresheet. FOLA has positioned himself in much the same way, describing himself as the artist people call when they need a hit.
The question now is what he intends to put on the musical scoresheet with ‘9.’
A 14-track album with familiar names
The first major glimpse into the project arrived with “it’s over,” a collaboration with FOLA’s label boss, Bella Shmurda, and rapper Zlatan.
Released alongside the album announcement, the song will serve as the project’s outro, closing out a 14-track body of work that is expected to explore several sides of FOLA’s sound.
The collaboration is also significant because it places the emerging singer alongside two established Nigerian acts, while maintaining the close ties that have shaped his rise so far.
But “it’s over” is only one piece of what listeners can expect from ‘9.’
FOLA and 2Baba revisit a classic
One of the project’s most notable records is expected to be “Crime,” featuring legendary Nigerian singer 2Baba.
Sources familiar with the project told TurnTable, speaking anonymously to protect their relationships, that the song will appear on ‘9.’
“Crime” is a remake of 2Baba’s 2006 record “If Love Is a Crime,” one of the songs that helped define the veteran artist’s catalogue during an important period in Nigerian pop music.
FOLA had already offered fans an early glimpse of the collaboration in February, when he teased a snippet of himself singing alongside 2Baba.
The remake therefore carries a sense of musical continuity: a younger artist revisiting the work of one of the country’s most influential singers while giving the song a new-generation interpretation.
The leaked song that became a TikTok favourite
Another record expected on the album has already developed a life of its own.
In May, an unreleased song began circulating on TikTok, quickly becoming the soundtrack to a growing number of posts and videos on the platform.
According to sources who spoke with TurnTable, the song is titled “WAF” and will be included on ‘9.’
Its presence on the album could give fans who have encountered the leaked version the opportunity to finally hear the official release in full.
More importantly, the song demonstrates how anticipation for FOLA’s music can build before a formal release campaign even begins. In an era where snippets, leaks and user-generated content can shape the conversation around a song, “WAF” has already accumulated an audience without the benefit of an official rollout.
Love, emotion and a more upbeat side
The records associated with ‘9’ so far suggest that FOLA is not abandoning the romantic themes that have become a defining part of his music.
His previously released collaborations and songs, including “treat you right” with Ayra Starr and “fine ting (fine $hit),” point toward the romantic and intimate territory that listeners have come to associate with his sound.
At the same time, “attention!” appears to bring a more energetic approach, offering a different tempo and mood.
Then there is “it’s over,” which introduces another shade. The song carries a more emotional and reflective tone, while also expressing appreciation — a contrast to the more flirtatious material that has characterised some of FOLA’s previous releases.

More than a follow-up to ‘catharsis’
FOLA’s sophomore project arrives with the benefit — and pressure — of a debut album that continues to perform well.
His first album, ‘catharsis,’ helped establish the foundation for the sound and identity he has continued to develop. ‘9’ now gives him an opportunity to expand that foundation.
The confirmed and reported material already points to a project with several points of interest: established collaborators, a remake of a 2Baba classic, a song that gained traction after leaking, new material yet to be heard and the possibility of different musical directions within the same album.
For an artist who has spent the last two years building momentum, the project represents another test of how far that momentum can carry him.
The album’s title says the objective clearly: the number nine is the player expected to score.
On October 9, FOLA will have the chance to show listeners exactly what he has been preparing for the next 14 tracks.
