Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has revealed that his wife, Simi’s genotype was a major consideration in his decision to pursue their relationship, saying he would not have proceeded with the marriage if she had been AS or SS.
The singer made the disclosure during a recent episode of the One54 Podcast, where he spoke candidly about his marriage and the factors he considered before taking the relationship to the next level.
Adekunle, who disclosed that he is SS, explained that knowing Simi’s genotype was one of the first things he sought to establish when they met. He said her being AA gave him the confidence to continue with the relationship.
According to the singer, his decision was influenced by his concerns about the possibility of having children who could suffer serious health complications.
“I wouldn’t have married my wife if she were SS or AS. Forget love. I don’t think it makes sense to bring a child into this world and they would be sickly. When me and my wife first met, the first thing I did was to know her genotype. She is AA. That was why I proceeded with the relationship,” he said.
His comments have drawn attention to the importance of genotype compatibility in relationships, particularly among couples who intend to have children. In Nigeria, genotype testing is commonly discussed as part of premarital health considerations because of the risk of sickle cell disease in children born to certain genotype combinations.
Adekunle Gold and Simi, both prominent figures in Nigeria’s music industry, got married in 2019 after years of friendship and a romantic relationship that eventually became public.
The couple have since welcomed two children and have continued to maintain a relatively private family life despite their high-profile careers.
Adekun Gold’s disclosure offers a glimpse into one of the personal considerations that shaped his decision to marry Simi, underscoring how health and future family planning can influence major relationship decisions.
