The new Hausa-language platform combines television broadcasting, digital production and online distribution in a bid to expand the reach of Northern Nigeria’s stories and creative talent.
A new Hausa-language television and digital media platform, Mahanga TV, has commenced operations in Kano, promising a broad mix of news, current affairs, drama, film, music, culture and entertainment aimed at audiences in Northern Nigeria and beyond.
Operating under Mahanga Media and Productions Ltd., the platform is positioning itself as a modern Hausa media organisation that combines conventional television broadcasting with digital content production, live streaming and online distribution.
The company said Mahanga TV is available as a Free-to-Air service on the Amos-17 satellite, offering viewers a mix of original productions and other Hausa-language programming.
Its launch adds another platform to Nigeria’s expanding broadcast and digital media landscape, while placing Hausa-language storytelling and Northern Nigerian creative talent at the centre of its programming strategy.
Giving Northern stories wider reach
Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Mahanga TV, Nuhu Abdullahi Balarabe, said the platform was established to provide greater visibility for stories, talent and cultural perspectives from Northern Nigeria.
“Mahanga TV was established from a deep conviction that Northern Nigeria has a wealth of stories, talent, culture and perspectives that deserve to be told with professionalism, creativity and global relevance,” Balarabe said.
He said the organisation would use a combination of broadcast technology and original storytelling to develop programmes covering current affairs, drama, film, music, culture and entertainment.
“Our vision is to build a modern Hausa media platform that informs, entertains and connects audiences while creating opportunities for Northern talent and amplifying stories that reflect who we are and where we are going,” he said.
Although the platform is headquartered in Kano, Balarabe said its ambitions extend beyond the city and the region.
“We are proud to be born in Kano, but our ambition is to take the stories and voices of Northern Nigeria to audiences across Nigeria and the world,” he said.
The ambition is reflected in the company’s corporate tagline: “Born in Kano. Built for the world.”
Broad programming slate
Mahanga TV’s published programming schedule spans several areas, including news, talk shows, current affairs, drama, feature films, music and cultural programmes.
Its talk and discussion programmes include Labaran Yau, Sahel Circle, Kano After Dark and Arewa Dialogues, while its current-affairs offering includes programmes under the Mahanga Newshour, Northern Report, Frontline and Market Day brands.
The company said its drama productions would draw from Hausa and Fulani cultural experiences and involve writers, directors and actors from Northern Nigeria.
Its film and entertainment content is similarly designed to provide a platform for creative works from the region, while its music and cultural programmes will feature both traditional expressions and contemporary sounds.
The programming mix reflects the company's attempt to combine information and entertainment while creating space for stories rooted in the experiences and identities of Northern communities.
Investment in production facilities
Mahanga TV said it has invested in production infrastructure at its facility in Farm Centre, Tarauni, Kano.
According to the company, the facility includes television studios, editing and post-production suites, audio recording booths, a live-streaming control room, meeting rooms and high-speed internet facilities.
Its production resources also include high-definition cameras, professional lighting and audio equipment, live-streaming systems, editing facilities and broadcast transmission equipment.
The company said its production workflow covers the various stages of content development, from concept creation and scripting to filming, editing and distribution.
Content is distributed through television as well as online platforms, social media and live-streaming channels.
Building a digital audience
Beyond satellite television, Mahanga TV is also seeking to strengthen its presence in the rapidly expanding digital media market.
The company said it plans to increase its digital offerings as audiences increasingly consume news and entertainment through smartphones, social media networks and streaming platforms.
A dedicated mobile application for iOS and Android is currently under development, according to the company. The proposed application is expected to give users access to programmes and updates while allowing them to consume Mahanga TV content on mobile devices.
Mahanga Media and Productions also lists online broadcasting, social-media campaigns, video production, event coverage and live streaming among its services.
The approach reflects the changing nature of media consumption, where television content can increasingly be repackaged and distributed across multiple platforms rather than being confined to traditional broadcast channels.
From Kano operation to full-service media organisation
According to the company’s published corporate timeline, Mahanga TV was founded in Kano in 2025 and expanded its studio and live-streaming infrastructure in 2026.
The company said it later expanded into digital campaigns and online broadcasting and produced its original Baya da Kura series in 2026.
It now describes itself as a full-service media organisation with interests spanning broadcasting, content production, events and live streaming.
The development comes against the backdrop of a media environment in which audiences are increasingly moving between television, websites, social media, streaming platforms and mobile applications.
For media organisations, the shift presents opportunities to distribute programmes across several channels and reach viewers beyond the geographical limits of conventional broadcasting.
Platform for Northern creatives
One of the stated objectives of Mahanga TV is to create additional opportunities for creative professionals in Northern Nigeria.
Journalists, filmmakers, actors, musicians, presenters, writers, directors and producers are among the groups that could find opportunities through the platform’s programming and production activities.
The company said its production model would enable local creatives to work on projects intended not only for Nigerian audiences but also for viewers internationally.
While Kano remains the centre of its operations, Mahanga TV has indicated that it intends to build a wider audience for Hausa-language content and Northern Nigerian stories.
The platform's launch therefore represents both a new entrant into Nigeria's competitive media industry and an effort to give regional stories and creative works a wider distribution network.
