Portugal coach praises Nigerian striker alongside Manchester City star after Nations League clash with Norway.
Portugal coach Jorge Jesus has placed Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen in the same elite category as Norway and Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, describing the two forwards as the most physically and technically powerful players in the world inside the penalty area.
Jesus made the assessment while discussing Haaland’s influence ahead of Portugal’s UEFA Nations League encounter with Norway at the Ullevaal Stadium in Oslo on Sunday.
The tournament holders eventually secured a 2-1 victory, with Haaland getting on the scoresheet for Norway. But while reflecting on the Norwegian striker’s threat, Jesus singled out Osimhen as the only player he believes can be directly compared with Haaland in the penalty area.
“Haaland is the most physically and technically powerful player inside the box,” Jesus said.
“Outside the area, he isn’t quite as dominant, even though he is fast. But inside the box, for me, he and Osimhen are the strongest in the world.”
The remarks represent a significant endorsement of Osimhen, the 2023 African Player of the Year, whose reputation as one of Europe’s most dangerous centre-forwards has been built on his combination of pace, power, aerial ability and clinical finishing.
Haaland, meanwhile, has continued to establish himself as one of the most prolific goalscorers of his generation. The 26-year-old has scored 65 goals in 57 appearances for Norway, adding to an already remarkable scoring record at club level.
Although Osimhen and Haaland operate within different tactical systems and possess distinct qualities, their games share several notable characteristics. Both forwards are physically imposing, difficult to contain in one-on-one situations and particularly dangerous when attacking crosses and through balls inside the penalty area.
Their finishing ability is another common strength. Both have demonstrated an instinct for finding space in crowded areas and converting chances under intense pressure, while their determination and ability to remain dangerous even when opportunities are limited have become defining features of their games.
Haaland, however, currently holds the advantage in overall career goals. The Norwegian has scored 371 goals for club and country, compared with Osimhen’s 214.
Fitness and availability have also been a notable point of difference between the two strikers. Osimhen has endured a series of injuries during his career and is currently sidelined by another setback, while Haaland has generally enjoyed greater continuity in terms of match availability.
Despite those differences, Jesus’ comparison underlines the standing Osimhen has earned among the leading strikers in world football.
For Nigeria, Osimhen’s continued recognition at the highest level also reinforces the country’s long-standing tradition of producing elite goalscorers. His combination of strength, movement and finishing has made him a central figure for both club and country when available.
Haaland and Osimhen may have taken different paths in their careers, but Jesus’ assessment places them together in one particularly demanding area of the game: the penalty box, where a fraction of space or a single opportunity can decide a match.
