Actor receives Bob Hope Humanitarian Award as he reflects on his diagnosis, public support and the fight to find a cure
Michael J. Fox received one of the television industry's highest humanitarian honors at the 2026 Emmy Awards, earning a standing ovation as he reflected on his decades-long battle with Parkinson's disease and his efforts to advance research into a cure.
Fox was presented with the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award during Monday night's ceremony in recognition of his advocacy and philanthropic work supporting Parkinson's disease research.
The honor, presented by the Television Academy and the Bob & Dolores Hope Foundation, was established in 2002. It recognizes an individual from the television industry whose charitable work has had a lasting impact on society.
Fox attended the ceremony with his wife, Tracy Pollan, marking the couple's first appearance together at the Emmy Awards in 13 years.
The emotional reception reflected Fox's enduring connection with television audiences, many of whom have followed both his acting career and his public campaign to raise awareness of Parkinson's disease.
‘I Kept My Parkinson's Diagnosis a Secret’
Fox was diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson's disease in 1991, when he was just 29 years old. He publicly disclosed his diagnosis seven years later, in 1998.
Standing on the Emmy stage, Fox recalled the fear and uncertainty that initially accompanied his diagnosis, particularly the possibility that the disease could affect his career.
“Initially, I kept my Parkinson's diagnosis a secret. I worried that it would affect my work and my relationship with audiences,” Fox said.
He also questioned whether revealing his illness would change the way audiences viewed him and his work.
“Would they laugh if they knew I was sick? And then I was stunned by the support I got. The support from all of you. It was so uplifting. It made me feel like I could keep doing this and I hadn't lost what I do and they couldn't take this away from me. And it's because you stood up for me, and I really appreciate it.”
Fox's decision to speak publicly about Parkinson's helped bring greater visibility to the disease and became a defining part of his life beyond acting.
A Fight for a Cure
Through his foundation, Fox has spent years raising money and awareness for Parkinson's research, with the goal of accelerating the development of treatments and ultimately finding a cure.
During his acceptance speech, he spoke optimistically about the progress being made in research, telling the audience that the foundation was “close” to finding a cure for Parkinson's disease.
His comments offered a hopeful note during a speech that also highlighted the personal challenges he has faced since his diagnosis.
Fox's advocacy has helped make Parkinson's disease more prominent in public discussions about neurological disorders, while his foundation has supported research aimed at understanding the disease and developing better treatments.
Fans Pay Tribute Online
The recognition quickly prompted an outpouring of support online, with viewers praising Fox for his resilience and his contribution to Parkinson's awareness.
“Michael J. Fox ❤️❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏We can all learn so much from him...🙏🏻👍,” one user wrote on X.
Another user highlighted the actor's role in bringing Parkinson's disease to the attention of younger generations.
“I really do think we underestimate how much Michael J Fox really put Parkinson’s 'on the map' so to speak. I knew about it as a little kid because of him and his advocacy for it.”
A third user described Fox simply as an inspiration, writing: “Michael J. Fox is an inspiration. The guy got dealt an awful hand.”
For Fox, the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award represents more than recognition for a career in television. It also acknowledges a decades-long effort to turn a personal health challenge into a platform for research, awareness and hope.
After years of living publicly with Parkinson's, Fox continues to use his influence to support scientists searching for answers — while encouraging millions of people affected by the disease not to lose hope.
