Nigerian Afrobeats star Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has opened up about a recent heartbreak, revealing that a woman he approached for a serious relationship turned down his proposal because she was not ready to commit.
The singer made the revelation during a livestream with streamer Okiki on Friday night, where he spoke candidly about his personal life and the inspiration behind his music.
According to Rema, he approached the woman hoping to build a long-term relationship, but she told him she wanted to remain single and continue experiencing life without committing to one person.
Rema said the woman made it clear that she was not ready to be taken “off the streets” and still wanted to explore her options.
He revealed that the experience eventually became the inspiration for his song, ‘Oh No.’
“The song was inspired by a lady I wanted a serious relationship with, but she said she still wants to be on the streets,” he said.
The 26-year-old singer also reflected on how rapidly his life changed after achieving fame as a teenager.
Rema rose to prominence at the age of 17 and has since established himself as one of Nigeria's most internationally recognised Afrobeats artistes, with a career that has taken him from the Nigerian music scene to major global stages.
However, he said the speed at which his career and personal life developed has prompted him to take a step back and reassess his journey.
Rema explained that he is currently taking time to re-evaluate his life because “everything moved so fast” after he became famous at 17.
His comments offer a more personal glimpse into the experiences behind his music, showing how events in his relationships and reflections on his rapid rise to fame continue to influence his creative process.
