The victory also became an emotional tribute to country music icon Dolly Parton, whom Swift described as the “ultimate showgirl” while dedicating the award to the late singer.
Swift received the Moon Person from the evening’s host, Snoop Dogg, after her self-directed video defeated entries from Ariana Grande, Madonna, Bruno Mars, GENER8ION and Sabrina Carpenter.
The singer began her acceptance speech by thanking fans who voted for her and expressing pride in the project.
“I’m so proud of it,” Swift said of the visual, which was released in October 2025.
She explained that she had deliberately designed the video to appear as though it had been filmed in a single continuous take.
“I wanted it to seem like one continuous shot, so I learned a lot about hiding cuts in places,” she said.
Swift also acknowledged the creative team behind the production, singling out cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto for helping build her confidence as she took greater control of her music-video direction.
The award-winning singer then turned her attention to Parton, dedicating the honour to the country music legend.
“Lastly and most importantly, I want to thank and dedicate this award to one person without whom this wouldn’t be happening,” Swift said.
“That person is the ultimate showgirl, Dolly Parton. Every single song that she wrote … her storytelling was so vivid and rich, listening to her songs, it was like watching the best music video you’ve ever seen in your life, every single time.”
Parton died at the age of 80 at the end of August following a battle with cancer, prompting tributes from across the entertainment industry.
Swift had previously honoured Parton following her death, praising the melodies and lyrics she created and their lasting emotional impact on generations of listeners.
At the VMAs, Swift also reflected on Parton’s relationship with her audience and the affection she showed her fans throughout her career.
“I am lucky I got to be one of them, and I will always be one of them,” Swift said.
“I love you all so very much, and I think that we were all very lucky to share this planet with Dolly Parton for a time. Thank you for this amazing moment. I love you all.”
The Video of the Year triumph extended Swift’s record as the artist with the most wins in the category in VMAs history.
She had previously won the award for “Bad Blood” in 2015, “You Need to Calm Down” in 2019, “All Too Well: The Short Film” in 2022, “Anti-Hero” in 2023 and “Fortnight” in 2024.
“The Fate of Ophelia” therefore becomes Swift’s sixth Video of the Year winner.
The song itself has also enjoyed significant commercial success, spending 10 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming Swift’s longest-running chart-topping single.
Swift’s latest achievement came during an already eventful night for the pop superstar.
She also received the first-ever Artist Director Award and premiered her new music video for “Patient Zero” during the ceremony.
Going into the event, Swift was the second-most nominated artist of the 2026 VMAs, with 11 nominations. Madonna led the field with 13 nominations.
The ceremony also featured several performances and tributes to Parton.
Kacey Musgraves delivered an emotional tribute to the late country icon, performing alongside archival footage of Parton singing “I Will Always Love You.”
Madonna opened the show with a medley of songs from Confessions II, joined by Sabrina Carpenter, Charli xcx and other celebrity guests.
RAYE, Sienna Spiro and LISA were among the other performers who took the stage during the ceremony.
For Swift, however, the night ultimately centred on another milestone in her increasingly decorated career and a heartfelt salute to an artist whose songwriting and connection with audiences had influenced generations of performers.
