Abbey Bank Plc, formerly Abbey Mortgage Bank Plc, is positioning itself for a broader role in Nigeria’s financial services industry following approval by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to transition to a regional commercial bank.

The development marks a significant milestone for the institution, which has spent more than three decades operating in mortgage finance, real estate development and customer-focused financial services. With plans to commence commercial banking operations in the fourth quarter of 2026, the bank is preparing to expand its reach beyond mortgage financing and serve a wider spectrum of customers.

The transition, according to the bank, goes beyond a change of name and operating licence. It represents a strategic move to broaden access to financial services, strengthen customer relationships and create new opportunities for individuals, households, businesses and communities across Nigeria.

As part of its preparations, Abbey Bank said it is strengthening its institutional capacity, updating its brand identity and upgrading its digital infrastructure to support its proposed expansion into retail, small and medium-sized enterprise (SME), and corporate banking.

The bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mobolaji Adewumi, described 2026 as a defining year in the institution’s history, noting that the regulatory approval reflects the progress made over the years and the confidence of its stakeholders.

“The year 2026 represents a defining moment in the history of Abbey. Our approval to transition to commercial banking is a testament to the work invested in building this institution and the confidence placed in us by our regulators, shareholders, customers and employees,” Adewumi said.

He explained that the bank intends to build on its longstanding experience in mortgage banking and real estate finance while broadening its capacity to meet the changing financial needs of individuals and businesses.

According to him, the transition presents an opportunity to make banking services more accessible, responsive and relevant to customers across different market segments.

“We are building on more than three decades of experience, particularly in mortgage banking and real estate finance, while preparing to serve a broader range of financial needs. Our ambition is to make banking more accessible, more responsive and more relevant to the aspirations of individuals, families and businesses,” he said.

Adewumi added that the bank’s immediate priority is to ensure that the transition to commercial banking is implemented smoothly without compromising the quality of service customers have come to expect.

“As we prepare for the commencement of commercial banking operations, our focus remains on delivering a seamless transition, strengthening our capabilities and ensuring that our customers continue to experience the trust, service and commitment that define Abbey,” he added.

To support its planned expansion, Abbey Bank said it is advancing technology integration, improving operational processes and facilitating the migration of customers to an enhanced core banking platform.

The upgraded infrastructure is expected to support a wider range of banking services, including products and solutions tailored to retail customers, SMEs and corporate clients.

The bank’s transition also places emphasis on financial resilience, sustainable growth and capital strengthening as it prepares to operate in the broader commercial banking segment. These priorities are expected to underpin its efforts to build operational capacity and establish a stronger presence in an increasingly competitive financial services market.

Abbey Bank’s reported financial performance in 2025 provides further context for its expansion plans. The institution recorded a pre-tax profit of N3.12 billion during the year, up from N1.22 billion in 2024, reflecting a substantial increase in earnings ahead of its planned operational transition.

The profit increase represents growth of approximately 155.7 per cent year-on-year, underscoring the improvement in the bank’s reported earnings over the period.

As Abbey Bank prepares to begin commercial banking operations in the fourth quarter of 2026, its ability to execute the transition, sustain financial performance and deliver effective digital and customer services will be central to its next phase of growth.

For an institution with more than three decades of experience in mortgage finance, the move signals an ambition to build on its established foundation while pursuing a broader role in meeting the financial needs of individuals, businesses and communities across Nigeria.
