Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has recorded a strong showing in two major international university rankings, reinforcing its position among Nigeria’s leading institutions in teaching, research, industry engagement and sustainable campus development.

In the 2027 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, ABU emerged as Nigeria’s third-highest-ranked public university and fourth overall among universities in the country.

The Zaria-based institution was placed in the 1,001–1,200 global band, alongside Bayero University, Landmark University and the University of Ilorin.

The ranking places ABU behind Covenant University, the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos, which were grouped in the 801–1,000 global band.

The latest THE ranking is based on 17 performance indicators covering five broad areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry and international outlook. The 2027 edition assessed 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories.

ABU’s performance was particularly notable in the teaching and industry categories. The university ranked third in Nigeria in Teaching and also recorded third place in the Industry category in the Nigerian breakdown.

Its Industry performance takes into account indicators such as industry income and patents, with ABU ranking as the second-highest federal university on that measure.

The results provide an indication of the university’s performance beyond traditional academic measures, particularly in areas involving interaction with industry, research application and institutional innovation.

Strong showing in sustainability ranking

ABU also maintained a notable position in the 2026 UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, where it was ranked fourth in Nigeria and 42nd in Africa.

The university recorded an overall score of 5,552.5 points, placing it 1,032nd among 2,016 participating institutions from 110 countries.

Unlike the THE ranking, which evaluates universities across a broad range of academic and institutional indicators, the UI GreenMetric ranking focuses specifically on sustainability and environmental responsibility.

ABU’s GreenMetric score was made up of 1,300 points in Energy and Climate Change, 905 in Water, 800 in Transportation, 700 in Education, 685 in Setting and Infrastructure, 612.5 in Governance and Digitalisation, and 550 in Waste.

The combined score of 5,552.5 points placed the university among Nigeria’s leading institutions in the sustainability-focused assessment.

The GreenMetric results highlight areas such as energy use and climate action, water management, transportation systems, waste management, campus infrastructure, education, governance and digitalisation.

Two rankings, broader picture

The two rankings assess different dimensions of university performance, providing separate benchmarks for ABU’s academic and institutional development.

While THE places greater emphasis on teaching, research, research quality, industry engagement and international outlook, UI GreenMetric concentrates on environmental sustainability and the development of greener, more responsible university campuses.

Taken together, the results offer a broader picture of ABU’s performance across academic activities, research, industry collaboration, international engagement and sustainability.

The rankings also provide benchmarks for the university as it continues efforts to improve its teaching and learning environment, strengthen its research ecosystem, expand industry partnerships and international collaborations, and advance sustainable campus development.

Continuing presence in global rankings

ABU’s latest results add to a series of strong positions recorded by the university in international rankings in 2026.

Earlier in the year, the university was ranked third in Nigeria in the QS World University Rankings 2027. It was also ranked fourth in Nigeria by the Centre for World University Rankings and third in Nigeria by the U.S. News Best Global Universities Ranking.

The latest THE and UI GreenMetric results consequently add further benchmarks to the university’s performance in international assessments.

For ABU, the rankings span several areas of contemporary higher education — from classroom teaching and research to innovation, industry engagement, international collaboration and environmental sustainability.

Its performance across the two latest rankings underscores the increasingly broad range of factors used internationally to assess universities and provides additional indicators against which the institution can measure its future progress.
