Former France international Bixente Lizarazu has thrown his weight behind Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal in the race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, insisting that the young winger stands out among the leading contenders for football’s most prestigious individual award.

The former defender believes Yamal deserves to emerge victorious ahead of high-profile rivals, including Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane and Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé, following what he considers an outstanding improvement in the teenager’s performances.

Speaking in comments reported by Actu Foot via Téléfoot, Lizarazu described the Barcelona star as a phenomenal talent whose development on the pitch has strengthened his case for the award.

“I am going to try to stick to my criteria. For me, it's no contest anymore—it's Lamine Yamal,” Lizarazu said.

The former Bayern Munich defender pointed to Yamal’s growing influence and elevated level of performance as key reasons for his preference, arguing that the winger’s achievements and individual quality place him ahead of other candidates.

“What he does on the pitch these days, on top of that, he has even raised his level. It is true that his World Cup wasn't incredible, but he is still a World Cup champion, he won the Spanish league, and he is a phenomenal player,” he added.

Yamal’s emergence as one of the leading figures in world football has placed him firmly in the conversation for the prestigious honour, with his performances for Barcelona attracting widespread attention.

However, Lizarazu acknowledged that the player’s World Cup showing was not exceptional, even as he highlighted his status as a world champion and his success in the Spanish league as factors supporting his candidacy.

The 2026 Ballon d’Or winner is expected to be announced before the end of the month, with attention focused on whether Yamal can turn the growing praise into the ultimate individual recognition.

While Kane and Mbappé remain among the names being discussed in the race, Lizarazu has made his position clear, declaring the Barcelona forward his outstanding choice for the award.
