The technology startup aims to create a digital community where pet lovers can share experiences, access pet care information, facilitate adoptions and connect with businesses offering animal-related products and services.

A Lagos-based technology startup, Grampets, has unveiled a digital platform designed to bring pet owners, animal care professionals, adoption services and pet-related businesses together in a single online ecosystem.

The platform was officially launched on Saturday, September 26, at The Lagos Pet Lovers Connect, held at Leisure Park, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, where pet owners, veterinarians, groomers, breeders, pet brands and other stakeholders in the animal care industry gathered to witness its debut.

Designed to make pet ownership more interactive and connected, Grampets combines social networking, messaging, user-generated content, pet adoption and electronic commerce, providing users with a central platform to share experiences, exchange knowledge and access services related to their pets.

Available on both iOS and Android devices, the application allows users to create dedicated profiles for their pets, post updates, share photographs, interact with other pet owners, ask questions about animal care and discover relevant products and services.

At the heart of the platform is the idea that pets should have digital identities of their own, enabling owners to document their animals’ lives and build communities around shared interests and experiences.

Unlike conventional social media platforms, where pets are typically featured through their owners’ personal accounts, Grampets places the animals themselves at the centre of the experience.

A personal experience inspires the platform

The idea behind Grampets was partly shaped by a personal experience involving its co-founder, Temitayo Bodunrin, and his dog, Kiki, a Lhasa Apso he received from his father.

After raising Kiki, Bodunrin found himself navigating the uncertainties surrounding her pregnancy and delivery, a period that brought questions for which he did not immediately have answers.

The experience highlighted the importance of having access to reliable information, shared experiences and a community of people who understand the responsibilities and challenges associated with caring for animals.

That experience helped inform the thinking behind Grampets, which seeks to provide pet owners with a digital space where they can ask questions, learn from others and connect with people who share similar interests.

The platform’s community-driven approach is designed to make pet ownership less isolating by encouraging interaction and information-sharing among owners, professionals and other participants in the pet care sector.

Giving pets their own digital identities

Co-founder Sherry Oladimeji explained that the platform allows users to create individual profiles for their pets, complete with details such as names, breeds, personalities and photographs.

Through a dedicated content feed, users can document their pets’ everyday experiences using a feature known as ‘Pet Moments’. The feature allows owners to share memorable activities, milestones and other aspects of their animals’ lives while engaging with a wider community of pet lovers.

Beyond personal updates, Grampets incorporates a discussion forum where users can exchange information about breeds, pet care practices and the everyday challenges of raising animals.

The forum is intended to encourage conversations among pet owners and create opportunities for users to learn from one another, seek advice and share practical experiences.

Reflecting on the journey from concept to launch, Oladimeji said: “Grampets started as a brainstorm between Temitayo and me. We kept at it until the idea had a shape. Saturday was the day that conversation became a living product.”

Her remarks underscored the transition from an initial idea into a functional digital platform intended to serve the needs of pet owners and businesses operating within the sector.

Adoption and commerce integrated into the platform

Beyond its social networking capabilities, Grampets also incorporates features designed to support pet adoption and commercial activities within the animal care industry.

The adoption feature allows users to list pets in need of homes and connect with prospective adopters, providing a digital channel through which animals can be matched with individuals interested in taking them in.

The initiative brings adoption-related interactions into the same environment where users discuss pet care, share experiences and discover animal-related services.

The platform also features an e-commerce marketplace where users can buy and sell pet-related products and services. Businesses operating in the sector can use the marketplace to showcase their offerings and connect with potential customers.

Explaining the platform’s broader functionality, Oladimeji said it was designed to extend beyond social interaction by bringing together different activities associated with pet ownership.

The combination of social networking, adoption and commerce is intended to give users access to multiple pet-related services without having to rely exclusively on separate digital channels for each need.

For pet businesses, the platform offers an additional avenue for visibility and engagement with a community of users who have an interest in animal care and related products.

Building connections within the pet community

Grampets also includes an integrated messaging feature that enables users to communicate with other pet owners, sellers and individuals involved in adoption listings.

The messaging function is designed to facilitate direct conversations, allowing users to discuss products, seek further information and engage with people they meet through the platform.

In addition, the application incorporates moderation and reporting features intended to support oversight of user activity and provide mechanisms for reporting inappropriate content or conduct.

These features form part of the platform’s effort to create a shared digital environment for individuals and businesses with interests spanning pet ownership, animal care and pet-related commerce.

The launch at The Lagos Pet Lovers Connect brought the platform before a gathering of stakeholders whose activities reflect the different segments Grampets hopes to serve, from veterinary care and grooming to breeding, adoption and retail.

Expanding the possibilities of digital pet care

With its launch, Grampets enters a digital space focused on connecting pet owners with communities, information and services relevant to animal care.

Its model places social interaction alongside practical activities such as finding products, contacting service providers and exploring adoption opportunities.

The platform’s longer-term prospects will depend on how effectively it attracts users, sustains meaningful engagement, builds relationships with pet-related businesses and establishes trust among members of its community.

As it develops, Grampets says more features are expected to be introduced, potentially broadening the ways users interact with the platform and access services.

For its founders, the launch marks the beginning of an effort to establish a dedicated digital community in which pets are more than occasional subjects of social media posts, but central to the connections, conversations and services that bring their owners together.
