The prolific forward remains uncertain about his chances despite leading the bookmakers’ odds, with the ceremony scheduled for 20:00 British time. Victory would make Kane the first Englishman since Michael Owen in 2001 to win the award, placing him among the country’s most celebrated footballing figures.
Kane’s candidacy has been strengthened by an outstanding campaign in which he scored 61 goals in 51 club appearances last season, while also helping England reach the World Cup semi-finals. However, he faces formidable competition from Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal and Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi, among other contenders on the 30-man shortlist.
Speaking after Bayern’s 2-2 Champions League draw against Arsenal on Wednesday, Kane acknowledged that the organisers’ decision to keep the result secret until the ceremony had heightened the anticipation surrounding the event.
“They want everyone to go, all the big names there and there will be more people watching it if they don't know, so I can understand why,” Kane said.
“From my point of view, of course, I'd love to know to just kind of see and not have to wait throughout the whole night. But it is their decision, I can't control that. We'll have to just enjoy it and try not to stress out too much.”
The 33-year-old demonstrated his continued importance to Bayern against Arsenal, providing an assist for Alphonso Davies before converting a penalty to extend his season tally to 10 goals in 11 appearances.
His strike also marked a significant European milestone, as he scored in his 10th consecutive European outing, leaving him just one match short of the competition record held by Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
Despite the growing excitement surrounding his potential Ballon d’Or triumph, Kane insists he is determined to avoid becoming distracted by the speculation and rumours circulating ahead of the ceremony.
“I try not to think about it. Obviously it is hard not to. There are always rumours flying around and you try to stay away from it,” he said.
“We have important games today and I know we have another important one on Sunday before the event on Monday so that's where my focus is. Of course I am going to try and enjoy Monday night as much as possible. It is a big occasion so we will have to wait and see.”
The organisers, France Football, changed their procedures in 2024 to prevent winners from being informed of the results before the ceremony. The revised approach followed controversy surrounding that year’s award, when a leak prompted Real Madrid to boycott the event after Vinicius Junior missed out on the prize to Manchester City midfielder Rodri.
Kane must first turn his attention to domestic duties before travelling to London for the gala. Bayern are scheduled to face third-placed Freiburg on Sunday in a crucial Bundesliga fixture as they seek to maintain their position at the summit of the table.
The German champions will also be eager to improve their European fortunes after an inconsistent start to their Champions League campaign. One victory and two draws in the league phase have left the Bavarian side 14th in the standings, increasing the importance of their upcoming fixtures.
For Kane, however, Monday’s ceremony offers the prospect of a career-defining moment. Whether he emerges as the next Ballon d’Or winner or leaves London empty-handed, the England captain’s achievements have placed him firmly among the leading contenders for individual recognition.
