Bayern Munich were left frustrated after Arsenal scored late to secure a 2-2 draw in their Champions League meeting on Wednesday, extending the Bavarian club’s run of dropped points in October. The result also marked the second consecutive Champions League match in which Bayern failed to claim maximum points.
Nevertheless, there were positives for Kompany and the Bayern faithful. Against an Arsenal side renowned for its defensive organisation, the German champions created numerous opportunities and demonstrated their ability to trouble one of Europe’s most disciplined teams.
Having bounced back impressively against RB Leipzig on Saturday, Bayern would have hoped to carry that momentum into their European assignment. Instead, they had to settle for a draw despite producing a performance that suggested they were capable of taking all three points.
While the late setback overshadowed aspects of their display, three players stood out for their contributions: Kane, Davies and Bischof.
Harry Kane: Leading from the Front
Kane once again demonstrated why he remains one of the most formidable strikers in world football, producing a commanding display against familiar opposition.
The England international knows Arsenal well from his years at Tottenham Hotspur, where he regularly troubled the North London club. However, facing the current Arsenal side presented a different challenge, with the Gunners establishing themselves among Europe’s leading teams.
Kane rose to the occasion, combining intelligent movement, precise distribution and clinical finishing to influence Bayern’s attacking play.
His contribution extended well beyond scoring. The striker played a crucial role in linking Bayern’s attacks in the final third, creating two chances and producing an outstanding pass that sent Davies through to score the hosts’ first goal. The timing and weight of the delivery were exceptional, allowing the Canadian to arrive in the box with the ball perfectly positioned for the finish.
Kane subsequently got his name on the scoresheet, calmly converting from the penalty spot. His composure under pressure complemented his ability to hold up possession, bring teammates into play and recognise their forward runs.
His all-round display earned him the man-of-the-match award, underlining his importance to Kompany’s side.
With such performances becoming a regular feature of his game over the past 12 months, Kane continues to strengthen his case as one of the world’s outstanding forwards. Another display of this quality will only reinforce his standing among the leading contenders for individual honours.
Alphonso Davies: A Welcome Return to His Best
Davies offered Bayern another major positive, showing his attacking quality after being deployed further up the left flank.
With Luis Diaz having started three consecutive matches, Kompany opted to give the Colombian a rest and introduce Davies on the left wing, while Josip Stanisic occupied the left-back position.
The decision paid dividends. Davies looked comfortable in his advanced role, using his pace and movement to stretch Arsenal’s compact defensive structure and create problems in wide areas.
His most important contribution came in the first half, when he timed his run superbly to score Bayern’s equaliser. The Canadian’s finish was equally impressive, leaving Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya with little opportunity to prevent the goal.
Davies also recorded three successful dribbles, the highest tally among the players during his time on the pitch, and registered 11 touches in the final third. His willingness to attack defenders and exploit space gave Bayern an additional dimension in their forward play.
Defensively, he remained diligent, working hard out of possession and supporting Stanisic against Arsenal’s attacks down the right.
The performance was particularly encouraging given Davies’ difficult previous 12 months, which were disrupted by injuries. His display against Arsenal suggested that he is rediscovering the form and confidence that made him one of the most dangerous attacking full-backs in European football.
For Kompany, Davies’ ability to excel in a different position also provides valuable tactical flexibility as Bayern navigate a demanding schedule.
Tom Bischof: A Midfield Opportunity Taken
Bischof produced one of the most encouraging performances of the evening, rewarding Kompany’s decision to hand him a starting role in the centre of midfield.
With Joshua Kimmich absent while grieving a personal loss, the Bayern coach turned to the 21-year-old to partner Aleksandar Pavlovic. It was a significant opportunity for Bischof, who is expected to play an increasingly important role following Leon Goretzka’s departure.
Facing a strong Arsenal midfield was a demanding test, but Bischof handled the challenge with maturity, composure and impressive technical discipline.
He completed 96 per cent of his passes, demonstrating his ability to retain possession under pressure without allowing his distribution to become overly conservative. He also created two chances and completed seven passes in the final third, contributing to Bayern’s attacking transitions.
His performance was not limited to possession. Bischof made four recoveries and was dribbled past only once during the entire 90 minutes, showing a willingness to compete defensively against high-quality opposition.
Although he did not register a goal or an assist, his overall contribution was significant. His passing accuracy, defensive work and ability to move the ball forward helped Bayern maintain their presence in midfield against one of Europe’s strongest sides.
The display should give both player and club confidence. For Bischof, the challenge now is to build on this performance, maintain consistency and gradually establish himself as a regular option in Kompany’s midfield.
Encouraging Signs Despite the Frustration
Bayern Munich will understandably regret allowing Arsenal to escape with a draw, particularly after creating enough opportunities to secure a more favourable result. Dropping points in consecutive Champions League matches will also increase the pressure to respond in their next European outing.
However, the performances of Kane, Davies and Bischof provide reasons for optimism. Kane continues to lead the attack with authority, Davies is showing signs of returning to his best, and Bischof has demonstrated that he can compete at the highest level.
For Kompany, the task is now to turn those individual displays into consistent team results. If Bayern can maintain their attacking threat while improving their ability to see out games, Wednesday’s disappointment could yet serve as a valuable lesson in their Champions League campaign.
