PEARL Awards Nigeria has unveiled the nominees for its 2026 edition, recognising leading companies listed on the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) for their performance across major sectors of the economy, as the organisation prepares to celebrate outstanding corporate achievements at its annual awards ceremony in November.

The nominees were announced at a press conference in Lagos by the President and Chief Executive Officer of PEARL Awards Nigeria, Tayo Orekoya, who disclosed that the grand presentation ceremony would hold on Sunday, November 29, 2026. The event will adopt a hybrid format, combining physical attendance with live streaming to accommodate stakeholders participating from different locations.

The announcement underscores the organisation’s continued commitment to promoting corporate excellence, transparency and accountability within Nigeria’s capital market, drawing on a track record that spans more than three decades.

“Since its establishment in 1995, PEARL Awards Nigeria has consistently distinguished itself as a credible and respected institution dedicated to identifying, recognising and rewarding outstanding performance among companies quoted on the Nigerian stock market,” Orekoya said.

He explained that the awards distinguish themselves from conventional recognition platforms by placing measurable corporate performance at the centre of the selection process rather than relying on nominations, popularity or subjective assessments.

“Unlike conventional recognition platforms that depend largely on nominations, subjective assessments or popularity considerations, the PEARL Awards employ a rigorous, research-driven and empirical methodology in evaluating corporate performance,” he stated.

According to Orekoya, the assessment framework evaluates listed companies using 10 key financial indices, including turnover growth, return on equity, dividend yield, return on assets, profit margin ratio and share price appreciation. The indicators are designed to provide a structured basis for comparing corporate performance and identifying businesses that have demonstrated measurable achievements in their respective sectors.

He added that the evaluation process involves several layers of scrutiny, with findings subjected to technical review and verification before being presented to the Board of Governors for final consideration and approval.

“The findings are subsequently subjected to rigorous review and verification by the Board’s Technical Committee before presentation to the full Board of Governors for consideration and final approval,” he said.

Emphasising the independence of the process, Orekoya maintained that the final decisions would be guided by the evidence produced through the assessment framework.

“Ultimate winners are determined by performance outcomes, not by corporate influence, sponsorship considerations or popularity,” he stressed.

Leading companies feature across sectors

The 2026 shortlist features several prominent companies across Nigeria’s banking, consumer goods, oil and gas, telecommunications and other business segments, reflecting the breadth of corporate activity represented on the Nigerian Exchange.

In the Banking category, Zenith Bank Plc, Guaranty Trust Holdings Company Plc (GTCO) and Wema Bank Plc are among the nominated institutions. Their inclusion places them among the financial services companies being considered for recognition under the awards’ performance-based framework.

The Food Products category features BUA Foods Plc, Cadbury Nigeria Plc and NASCON Allied Industries Plc, while Seplat Energy Plc, Aradel Holdings Plc and Eterna Plc have earned nominations in the Oil and Gas sector.

Other companies nominated across various Market Excellence subcategories include Guinness Nigeria Plc, MTN Nigeria Communications Plc and Okomu Oil Palm Plc.

The breadth of the nominations reflects the awards’ focus on assessing companies across different industries, using financial indicators to evaluate performance rather than applying a single measure of success to businesses operating under different market conditions.

Capital market developments shape outlook

Beyond the awards, Orekoya used the occasion to reflect on developments shaping Nigeria’s capital market, highlighting major transactions and institutional milestones that could influence the market’s depth, visibility and future growth.

He drew particular attention to the proposed N2.15 trillion Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals initial public offering, describing it as a potentially significant development for the Nigerian stock market.

“Of particular significance is the ongoing N2.15tn Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals Initial Public Offering, which, subject to its successful completion and eventual listing, has the potential to significantly expand market capitalisation, deepen market participation and further strengthen the Nigerian stock market,” he said.

Orekoya noted that the successful completion and eventual listing of the offering could broaden the market’s investment opportunities and attract greater participation, although its ultimate impact would depend on the transaction’s outcome.

He also highlighted Nigeria’s growing influence in continental capital market affairs following the election of Jude Chiemeka, Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Exchange Limited, as president of the African Securities Exchanges Association.

“Equally noteworthy is the emergence of Nigeria’s leadership within the African Securities Exchanges Association, following the election of the Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Exchange Limited, Jude Chiemeka, as President of the Association,” Orekoya said.

The development, he suggested, represents an important milestone for Nigeria’s standing within Africa’s securities market community and provides an opportunity to strengthen engagement and cooperation among exchanges across the continent.

Beyond the annual awards

This year’s edition is themed “Celebrating Excellence, Inspiring the Future,” a message that reflects PEARL Awards Nigeria’s ambition to expand its contribution beyond the annual recognition of corporate performance.

The organisation is extending its activities into thought leadership through initiatives such as the PEARL Awards Annual Corporate Summit, which is intended to provide a platform for discussions on corporate performance, capital market development and broader economic issues.

It is also preparing for the release of the 2027 Nigerian Stock Market Annual, an initiative that further reflects its interest in documenting developments and promoting greater understanding of Nigeria’s investment landscape.

The expanded focus positions the awards not only as a platform for celebrating corporate achievements but also as a means of encouraging informed discussion about the factors that support sustainable business growth and a stronger capital market.

In his closing remarks, Orekoya reiterated the organisation’s commitment to recognising companies that demonstrate strong performance while contributing to the development of Nigeria’s financial system.

“As our theme aptly captures, we shall continue ‘Celebrating Excellence, Inspiring the Future,’ as we look forward to welcoming stakeholders on November 29 to recognise excellence, inspire achievement and contribute to the sustainable advancement of Nigeria’s capital market and economy,” he said.

With the nominees now unveiled, attention will turn to the November 29 ceremony, where the eventual winners across the various categories are expected to be announced in recognition of their performance on the Nigerian Exchange.
