The Johannesburg rap-pop artist celebrates South African identity, love and the art of yearning on his latest release.

South African rap-pop artist ZULO releases his new single, “meddie,” alongside its official music video today. Produced by ZULO, the track is the lead single from his forthcoming project, Something Lekker, arriving 6 November, and marks his first release since 2025’s Z single pack.

Building on the feel-good sound of fan favourite “lamza,” “meddie” explores love through playful sincerity, melodic warmth and a distinctly South African lens. Inspired by classic ’80s love songs, the track embraces the feeling of losing yourself in love without overthinking it.

“‘meddie’ is South African. It’s always important to me to make music that feels very South African. It doesn’t overthink itself; it’s about losing yourself to love. You know how they say, ‘bring back yearning’? I’m bringing it back. It’s inspired by those classic ’80s love songs, playful but sincere,” says ZULO.

The accompanying music video extends the song’s romantic spirit, bringing another dimension to ZULO’s creative vision as he introduces the next chapter of his artistry.

“meddie” offers the first glimpse into Something Lekker, a project centred on love, home, family and belonging. Rooted in ZULO’s experiences and cultural identity, the project reflects his approach to making music that feels familiar while remaining distinctly his own.

With “meddie,” ZULO invites listeners to embrace romance in its simplest form: wholeheartedly, unapologetically and without overthinking the feeling.

Born and raised in the south of Johannesburg, ZULO is a South African rap-pop artist blending hip-hop, pop and kwaito into a sound that feels both nostalgic and distinctly his own. His music draws from the richness of South African culture, weaving together local influences, humour, language and melodic warmth.

His versatility is evident across the kwaito bounce of “Adawise,” the hip-hop and trap energy of “JOL,” and the Afro-pop warmth of “Smaak To Love (Lamza).” Beyond music, his eccentric approach to fashion reflects the same creative freedom, moving between vintage and contemporary influences.

A multidisciplinary creative, ZULO began releasing music as a teenager, topping commercial radio charts while still in high school. Today, he continues to shape his own interpretation of South African music, with ambitions of taking his distinctly local sound to a global audience as a proudly Coloured rap-pop artist.
