Saraki |
Certainly the civilian coup that
took place in the hallowed chamber of the Senate of the Federal Republic of
Nigeria in the morning of Tuesday 9th June, 2015, has come and gone,
but the dust raised by the event is obviously yet to clear, and the perceived
ugly development has reportedly done much damage to the calculation of the
ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
For the National Leader of the APC,
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the now historical emergence of the incumbent Senate
President, Dr. Olusola Saraki against Senator Ahmed Lawan chosen by the party
during its mock election for the coveted office is an affront on not only him,
(Tinubu), but the party as a body.
The calculation of the party had
been that someone from the North East, Ahmed Lawan would be the Senate
President, while George Akume from the North Central would emerge the Deputy
Senate President.
On other hand, the party had planned
to make Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila from the South West the Speaker of the House of
Representatives, while someone from the North East would serve as his deputy.
But all these were jettisoned on Tuesday 8th, when Senators, under
the name “Like Minds” chose to conduct an election into the seats of the senate
president and deputy senate president, while most senators elected under the
APC were at the International Conference Centre (ICC) Abuja to attend a meeting
called by President Muhammadu Buhari to resolve the issue bothering on the
leadership crisis in the National Assembly.
An APC chieftain, who did not
give his name, told us last week that the party did not send its Chairman,
Chief John Odigie Oyegun to tell pressmen that the party has come to terms with
the emergence of Senator Saraki and Hon. Dogara as Senate President and House
of Reps Speaker respectively.
Dogara |
“The whole thing was below the
belt for the party. People are accusing Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of meddling
with the affairs of the National Assembly, not minding the fact that this was a
man God used to cause change in the country. Apart from that, what happened
behind the scene were more than what we all saw on the surface. Many
politicking went on underground and the whole thing bothers on calculation and
arrangement by the party. I cannot stay here to tell you all that we did behind
the scene, but be rest assured that Senator Saraki and Hon. Dogara would pay
dearly for their over-ambition,” said the party’s chieftain.
According to him, democracy is
all about consensus and compromise, adding that making Senator Ike Ekweremadu from
the South East under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Deputy Senate President has changed the
plan of the party of giving the post of the Secretary to the Federal Government
(SGF) to someone from the South East.
Another source disclosed that
Asiwaju Tinubu and some leaders of the party are pained by what they term as
‘the destruction of a house built over the years that led to the exit of the
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from power at the centre.’
He said that the whole thing is
almost like waste of resources and time as the PDP is now having a say in the
scheme of things at the National Assembly with the coalition between them and
Senator Bukola Saraki.
“It goes beyond what you are
seeing on the surface, how could Saraki work with those we all agreed were
running the nation down, and who we eased out of office to make life better for
the masses. We can no longer trust Saraki, Dogara and other APC members, who
worked with them. They are now working against our common decision to use the
APC to bring Nigeria to where she belongs. You can see that the Yorubas have
lost out again as they lost the House of Reps leadership. Many people would
talk about the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo. What is the work of a
Vice President is it not to hold forth if the President is not around and he
could not even come up with any policy. He is working at the mercy of the
president, who would only assign to him what he deems fit at any point in
time,” he said.
The source added that the APC
would not allow impunity, as according to him, this was what caused the
problems of the PDP in the first place, adding that the APC remains unshaken in
its resolve to take the nation to the Promised Land.
