Nadal, Schwartzman Book Rematch in Paris

Argentina's Diego Schwartzman finally overcame the hurdle of the quarterfinals at a major after three attempts, as the 28-year-old on Tuesday edged two-time Roland Garros finalist and newly-crowned US Open champion, Dominic Thiem 7-6 (1), 5-7, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (5), 6-2 to book a spot in the French Open semifinals.

The five-hour and eight-minute triumph, which was Schwartzman's first victory over a top-five player at a Grand Slam, set up a rematch of the Rome quarterfinals against Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who withstood a challenge from 19-year-old Jannik Sinner and pulled away to win 7-6 (4), 6-4, 6-1 in the last match of the day, which finished at 1:30 am on Wednesday.

Schwartzman stunned Nadal 6-2, 7-5 two weeks ago in the Italian capital.

"In the second set and the third set, I had a lot of opportunities, also easy opportunities," said Schwartzman after his 20th victory of 2020. "That's why I was really upset, really angry with myself at that time ... when I was close to winning in those sets. I couldn't do it."

The 12th seed poured out his intense emotions on the court, yelling at himself or his coaches after wasting several chances.

"I mean, we both gave everything," said the third-seeded Thiem. "The thing in tennis is that there is one loser, one winner. Despite (being) so disappointed, I'm still happy for him."

"To be honest I was over the limit today. At the end I gave everything that I had out there, it was an amazing match," the 27-year-old added.

Defending champion Nadal was one of the "victims" of this epic clash, as his quarterfinals match against Sinner, which was scheduled as the last match of the day,had to start later and ended in the early hours of Wednesday.

Clinching a victory in his 100th match at Roland Garros, the record 12-time champion secured a place in the last four for 13th time in the clay major, ending an impressive run from Sinner who had upset 11th seed David Goffin and 6th seed Alexander Zverev in his previous matches.

"I'm very, very happy to be in the semifinals again and here at Roland Garros," Nadal said on court. "No doubt that this is the most important place for me and the most beautiful place to play."

But the Spaniard again hit out at the weather conditions of the tournament, just like what he did on his arrival in Paris ten days ago, as the temperature had plummeted to 12 degrees when he played on the Court Philippe-Chatrier after midnight.

"I know footballers play under these conditions, but they are all the time moving," said Nadal after the latest ever finishing time for a match at the tournament.

"We stop, we come back, we stop on the changeovers. I think this is a little bit dangerous for the body with these very heavy conditions."

In the women's action, Iga Swiatek, who shocked top seed Simona Halep in the fourth round, continued her momentum by dispatching Italy's qualifier Martina Trevisan 6-3, 6-1 to become the first Polish woman to reach the semifinals at Roland Garros in the open era, one round further than former world No.2 Agnieszka Radwanska.

The 19-year-old will face another qualifier -- Nadia Podoroska of Argentina in the semifinals. The latter stunned third-seeded Elina Svitolina 6-2, 6-4 to advance. Enditem.
