During a visit in Abuja to the Chief Executive Officer,
FCCPC, Babatunde Irukera, NANTA’s President, Susan Akporiaye said they were at
the Commission to seek its “guidance and solution-driven advice” on their
face-off with foreign Airlines over “unfair airfare pricing” in Nigeria.
According to Mrs. Akporiaye, the Association is committed to
protecting its members and their businesses from any form of exploitation and
unfair practices from any quarter, adding that the high fares and closing of
lower inventories to travel agents across Nigeria is unfair.
At a news conference in Lagos early in February, NANTA had
condemned what they saw as high-handedness by the foreign Airlines, which had
created an uproar among the Nigerian traveling public, leading to the shutdown
of many travel trade companies and consequent job losses.
Mrs. Akporiaye also requested the FCCPC to assist NANTA and
the Nigeria traveling public with remedies to curb the unfair practices in the
downstream aviation sector as well as how best to articulate their position
going forward.
“We strongly view from our professional experience and
knowledge of fare mechanism that the reactions of foreign airlines on trapped
funds is grossly unfair to the Nigerian traveling public and gravely threatens
the survival of NANTA members,” she complained.
Responding, the FCCPC CEO, Mr Irukera, commended the NANTA Leadership for the trust
and confidence in government structured Competition and Consumer Protection
ecosystem, adding that the commission
would study the issues and engage necessary interventions, which may include
inviting parties and stakeholders involved.
