Nigerian singer-songwriter, Sarah Aderibigbe, popularly known as Ayra Starr has revealed how Rema, her colleague, played a role in shaping her musical path.
In a recent interview with Capital Xtra, the songstress said
Rema motivated her to venture into the music industry even before they became
labelmates.
She said his musical achievements at 18 inspired her.
The singer said he always provides honest feedback for her
craft and considers him an “amazing artiste” and a source of inspiration.
“I looked up to Rema even before I joined the label. His
first EP, I was like wow this is a Nigerian teenage boy, he was like 18. I was
like wow I did not know that was possible. I was like I can do this too,” she
said.
“He is very honest with me. I play him every song before it
comes out and he is just like hmm I do not know about that one o and if he
likes it he is like this one na demo you try. He is an amazing artiste and I am
very inspired by him.”
Both artistes have continued to enjoy fame since being
signed to Mavin Records, the music label owned by Don Jazzy.
Last year, the songstress denied rumours of being
romantically involved with Rema.
In December 2022, Rema opened up about the nature of his
relationship with Ayra Starr.
He said at some point in his career, he could not attend
social events or parties without her because “she is a vibe”.
“Ayra is a vibe. There are a lot of times… It got to a point
where I just could not go out to parties without Ayra. She is a vibe and she
has ginger,” Rema had said.
Ayra Starr released ‘Rush’, a track off her debut album ‘19
& Dangerous’, in September 2022.
The song was nominated in the maiden ‘Best African Music
Performance’ category at this year’s Grammy Awards.
The songstress, who had prepared her acceptance speech in
case her hit single ‘Rush’ won the maiden ‘Best African Music Performance’
category, however, lost to Tyla, the South African singer.
Starr recently told the Grammys that her family is proud of
her personality.
Ayra Starr became a viral sensation after releasing ‘Bloody
Samaritan’, a track off her debut album ‘19 & Dangerous’.
