The Nigeria Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) said Monday, that the death toll from the devastating Cholera outbreak has peaked at 53 deaths with 1528 suspected cases in 31 states across 107 Local Government Areas.

Disclosed this on the NCDC Twitter handle, @NCDCgov, Dr. Jide Idris, NCDC Director General said that the case fatality rate of 3.5 percent since the beginning of the year has placed Nigeria at a high-risk level (level 3).

Idris also said that Lagos State, the epic centre for the outbreak, recorded the highest number of cases.

Thirty persons died from Cholera out of 1,141 suspected cases across 96 Local Government Areas in 30 Nigerian states following the disease outbreak in five months from January 1, to June 11, 2024.

The Tweet reads, “Following a dynamic risk assessment of the #cholera epidemiological situation which placed the country at a very high risk of increased cholera transmission, we have activated the National #Cholera Emergency Operations Centre (EOC).

“As of 24th June 2024, a total of 1528 suspected cases and 53 deaths have been recorded across 31 States.

“The EOC will coordinate the national response, especially across the affected states to interrupt disease transmission and reduce the impact of the disease and other socioeconomic complications of this disease.”
