Airtel employees displayed their commitment to environmental sustainability by participating in a beach cleanup activity at Baadun Beach, Ajah, on September 23, 2024. This event, organized under the Airtel Employees Volunteer Scheme (EVS), served as an extension of the company's 2024 World Environment Day initiatives.

The event attracted more than 100 employees from Airtel Nigeria, along with students from the Refiners Academy in Sangotedo, who are also part of the Green Fingers Initiative. The participation of these students was intended to promote inclusivity for those enrolled at the sustainability center, which was previously donated by Airtel, and to strengthen the recycling practices advocated by the Green Fingers Initiative.

In acknowledging the contributions of the staff, Carl Cruz, the Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Nigeria, highlighted the significance of maintaining consistency in sustainability efforts.

"Today’s exercise highlights the power of collective effort in protecting our environment. We are passionate about sustainability, and I encourage everyone to incorporate this into their daily routines, whether at work or during personal activities. The future we envision is one where we have a thriving community, a clean environment, and a healthy planet, and it starts with events like this. I am incredibly proud of the team and the hard work everyone has put in today," he said.

Also speaking at the event, Director of Corporate Communications and CSR, Femi Adeniran, highlighted the role of the initiative in promoting sustainable environmental practices.

“This initiative is part of our broader effort to reduce plastic pollution and encourage sustainable living. By embarking on this clean-up today, we are leading by example and setting a precedent for other organizations to follow. What makes today’s clean-up special is that it is led by our very own employees, reflecting our internal commitment to sustainability. This is just the start of more sustainable engagement to come, as we work towards building a cleaner, healthier environment”

The event, to which the sustainability Non-Governmental Organization, Green Fingers Initiative, was also invited, exemplifies Airtel's dedication to fostering environmental sustainability through practical initiatives. Staff members enthusiastically participated in clearing the beach of waste and litter, making a significant contribution to the cleanliness and preservation of the environment.

The beach clean-up is one of the numerous measures Airtel Nigeria is undertaking to achieve its environmental sustainability objectives. By involving employees and collaborating with a sustainability-focused organization, the company reaffirms its commitment to minimizing plastic pollution and safeguarding the environment for future generations.
