In a time when environmental sustainability is intricately linked to economic growth, the circular economy has emerged as a crucial strategy to address numerous challenges in urban settings.
In contrast to the traditional linear economic model, which follows a "take, make, dispose" pattern, the circular economy emphasizes resource reuse, waste reduction, and extending the lifespan of products and materials. This innovative approach not only minimizes environmental impact but also generates novel opportunities for growth and creativity.
In Lagos State, a bustling metropolis that generates substantial quantities of waste daily, the imperative for efficient waste management strategies has become paramount..
Recent research shows that Lagos generates over 10,000
metric tons of waste daily, with a significant portion ending up in landfills
without adequate processing. This situation not only burdens the city’s
infrastructure but also presents serious health and environmental challenges.
Acknowledging the opportunity to transform this issue into a
positive outcome, Wema Bank, in collaboration with the Lagos State Government,
has endorsed the “Leave No One Behind” initiative.
This pioneering program aims to empower over 20,000 women
and girls with the necessary skills to engage in the circular economy,
converting waste materials into valuable products and promoting economic
self-sufficiency.
Through this initiative, Wema Bank is not only enhancing
individual livelihoods but also playing an active role in advancing sustainable
urban development.
The initiative emphasizes the importance of empowering
marginalized communities and transforming waste into valuable resources,
highlighting the capacity of innovative, sustainability-focused solutions to
revitalize economies and improve the living standards of all community members.
Significant achievements of the initiative include the
cultivation of circular economy skills among women at the Special Correctional
Centre for Girls in Idi-Araba, where they have been trained to create ottoman
seats, mirrors, and jewelry from recycled materials.
Furthermore, the establishment of a collection center serves
approximately 1,000 community members, facilitating the weekly collection of
200 kg of recyclables, which generates income for the center.
The initiative also features the implementation of a biogas
digester that produces 100 kg of methane gas, supplying sustainable cooking
fuel for the kitchen at the Special Correctional Centre and enhancing the
availability of organic fertilizer for the facility’s farm, thereby improving
crop quality and lowering market costs.
These accomplishments illustrate the center's evolution into
a circular economy model, focusing on resource efficiency, cost reduction,
revenue generation, and decreased carbon emissions.
The infrastructure supports 1,000 individuals, creates 50
job opportunities, collects 200 kg of recyclable waste daily, and generates 100
kg of biogas, effectively substituting LPG and lowering expenses.
WEMA Bank plays a crucial role in this initiative. The bank
is dedicated to enhancing lives through innovation, and this project aligns
seamlessly with its mission.
WEMA Bank is providing grants to support the new enterprises
and skills developed by the women participating in the initiative.
Additionally, the bank offers the SARA Health Plan to ensure the health and
well-being of these women.
WEMA Bank is dedicated to fostering financial literacy,
providing SME toolkits, and offering various resources that benefit children,
youth, and the wider community in Lagos State.
The bank recognizes the potential of the circular economy to
establish sustainable enterprises, enhance local economies, and support micro,
small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which are essential for economic
development and progress.
This initiative transcends a mere empowerment program; it
represents a holistic approach to ensuring that marginalized individuals find
legitimate employment following their release.
By transforming waste into valuable assets, the initiative
aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 12, which focuses on responsible
consumption and production. WEMA Bank is actively endorsing and advancing SDG
12 by fostering a circular economy that emphasizes the use, reuse, and
recycling of resources.
This commitment not only opens avenues for young individuals
to manage sustainable businesses and contribute to local economies but also
underscores WEMA Bank’s pledge to sustainable development and responsible
corporate citizenship.
The "Leave No One Behind" initiative, championed
by WEMA Bank, holds significant potential to enhance Lagos State’s economy
through innovative revenue-generating strategies.
The girls' correctional center has been revitalized into a
dynamic collection hub, engaging around 1,000 community members and collecting
200 kg of recyclables each week. This operation not only enhances community
welfare but also generates considerable revenue by converting waste into
valuable resources.
Through this initiative, WEMA Bank is playing a pivotal role
in promoting sustainable waste management practices and creating financial
incentives that empower local communities and stimulate economic growth.
The initiative has significantly influenced both social and
economic dimensions. By enabling women to create marketable products from waste
materials like ottoman seats, mirrors, and jewelry, it promotes economic
self-sufficiency and innovation. This empowerment not only benefits individuals
but also enhances the overall economy by incorporating circular economy
principles into local enterprises.
This project holds the promise of generating new employment
opportunities, thereby providing stable jobs and improving the livelihoods of
participants.
The implementation of a biogas digester, which generates 100
kg of methane gas, presents a cost-effective and environmentally friendly
alternative to LPG. This sustainable approach underscores the commitment to
lowering carbon emissions while demonstrating the tangible advantages of
circular economy practices.
Additionally, by providing organic fertilizer to the
facility’s farm, the initiative has elevated the quality of produce, lowered
market prices, and ensured improved nutrition for the community. This bolsters
local agriculture and underscores the economic benefits of sustainable methods.
The accomplishments of the “Leave No One Behind” initiative
mark a crucial advancement towards a circular economy framework, focusing on
resource efficiency, cost reduction, and environmental responsibility.
The established infrastructure now supports 1,000
individuals, has generated new jobs, and contributes to decreased carbon
emissions and operational expenses, showcasing the extensive socio-economic
benefits of these initiatives.
WEMA Bank is dedicated to expanding this model throughout
Lagos to enhance its social and economic advantages, advancing the objectives
of Mr. Governor’s T.H.E.M.E.S Agenda. This collaboration highlights Wema Bank’s
commitment to improving lives through innovative solutions and its ongoing
focus on sustainable development and community empowerment.
