President William Ruto has defended the initiative to lease Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to the Indian firm Adani Group for its renovation and expansion, with the goal of boosting Kenya's capacity to attract 5 million tourists by 2027.

During his address at the Magical Kenya Travel Expo 2024 held at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi, Ruto highlighted Kenya's status as a leading tourist destination, underscoring the importance of the proposed airport upgrades.

"We aim to welcome five million tourists, which necessitates the expansion of our airport and hospitality infrastructure nationwide," Ruto remarked. "By the end of 2023, Kenya had received over 2.3 million visitors, generating Ksh350 billion in revenue—this clearly demonstrates our international appeal."

He urged a collaborative approach across various sectors to establish Kenya as a must-visit location. Earlier this year, the Adani Group presented a privately initiated proposal (PIP) for a 30-year concession to expand and manage JKIA through a "build, operate, and transfer" framework.

Despite concerns raised by employees of the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), who recently protested over job security, Adani has assured that all KAA staff will maintain their positions under the current terms.

The investment from Adani not only aims to modernize essential infrastructure but also signifies a growing trend of Indian investments contributing to economic development in Africa, including Kenya.
