A significant milestone was achieved over the weekend in Lagos with the inauguration of WASH FM 94.9, Nigeria's first dedicated Health Radio Station.

Broadcasting on 94.9 FM from its location in Olowora, Omole Phase 2, the station will concentrate solely on health-related content.

The launch event drew notable personalities from both the broadcasting and healthcare industries.

In her opening remarks, Prof. Ronke Ogunmakin, the Founder of WASH FM 94.9, expressed her joy at realizing a vision she has nurtured for 25 years.

She extended her gratitude to her board members for their unwavering support, which was instrumental in bringing this vision to life.

Ogunmakin noted that the radio station is in alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those pertaining to health and access to information (SDG 3 and 16.10).

She underscored the critical role of health in people's lives, stating, “Health is a global issue. If you don’t have good health, you have nothing.”

Additionally, she pointed out the significance of WASH FM in addressing the myriad health challenges currently facing the world, including cancer.

One of the distinctive aspects of the station is its integration of telemedicine into its programming. Health professionals will offer guidance, and the station will inform listeners about available medical care options.

Prof. Ogunmakin urged both governmental and private entities to back this initiative, emphasizing the necessity for the Nigerian community to access health information.

Pastor Toba Akinmoladun, Chairman of Agape Health Ltd and the event's chair, articulated that WASH FM aims to educate the public, enabling them to make informed health choices.

“Ignorance leads to numerous issues, and many arise from it. WASH FM provides an excellent platform for anyone concerned about their health,” he stated.

Ralph Akpan, the Regional Director of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) for the Lagos Zone, expressed his enthusiasm for this new venture, highlighting NBC's pride in supporting Nigeria's first health-focused radio station.

Chief Sulaimon Ogungbayi, the Baala of Olowora, shared his enthusiasm for the establishment of a health radio station in his locality.

The event featured highlights such as a studio tour and a live broadcast with special guests.

WASH FM 94.9 is poised to become an essential resource for health information and education, empowering Nigerians to make knowledgeable decisions regarding their health.
