The 2024 iteration of the media workshop took place on Thursday in a hybrid format, centering on the theme “Integrating AI Tools in Contemporary Media Practices for Innovation and Excellence.”
During the event, Rasheed Bolarinwa, Head of Brand Management and Corporate Communications at Polaris Bank, emphasized the bank's ongoing commitment to supporting journalists and the media, which he described as a crucial component of society.
“Journalists and the media play an essential role in shaping public discourse and promoting informed citizenship,” Mr. Bolarinwa stated. “Our dedication to training journalists across various media platforms stems from our belief that they deserve the highest level of support to thrive in their careers.”
He mentioned that the bank initiated its media training by collaborating with a journalism clinic and conducting workshops in multiple cities throughout the country. The media clinic, which focused on the evolution of the media landscape, was led by veteran journalist Mr. Taiwo Obe.
Bolarinwa revealed that over 500 journalists registered for the 2024 workshop and expressed optimism that the bank would continue to enhance its support for journalists and the media by engaging top-tier faculty to address contemporary issues in future workshops.
The program covered a wide array of topics, including creativity, AI tools, and critical thinking. Dr. Chike Mgbeadichie, a Senior Lecturer at the Pan African University, shared insights on the use of AI tools in media practices, while Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin, Executive Director of the Media Career Development Network, explored current media trends such as multimedia journalism, fact-checking, and data journalism.
Dr. Mgbeadichie emphasized that by the conclusion of the seminar, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in profound reflection on the thoughts, actions, and processes essential for generating innovative ideas and possibilities. He further highlighted the importance for journalists to develop skills in analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating information, as well as to familiarize themselves with various AI tools available in the media landscape and to comprehend the advantages these tools offer in modern media practices.
Mr. Otufodunrin elaborated on the necessity for journalists to become proficient in solutions journalism to bolster their investigative skills. He pointed out the importance of utilizing contemporary tools such as OSINT, geo-journalism, data analysis, digital forensics, blogs, social media, newsletters, podcasts, e-publishing, and social media interactions.
Participants from various regions of Nigeria, both virtually and in person, expressed their appreciation for the chance to improve their professional skills. Segun Adeleye, the publisher of Worldstage, praised Polaris Bank for its ongoing commitment to promoting media excellence in Nigeria.
