This new local cloud, supported by Tier 3+ data centers, delivers exceptionally fast services with a latency of only 15 milliseconds.
By keeping data storage and computing resources within Nigeria, it offers significant advantages to local businesses and sectors, especially fintech companies that must comply with stringent data protection regulations.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Huawei announced the launch event, titled “Leap Now With A Better Cloud,” which was held in Lagos State on Tuesday.
During the event, Chris Lu, CEO of Huawei Nigeria, highlighted the company's commitment to advancing Nigeria's digital economy.
Lu remarked that this initiative represents a crucial step towards fulfilling the country's data protection regulations and aligns with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission's goals to restrict cross-border data transfers and ensure data remains within national borders.
“With disruptive technology, we can revolutionize our daily lives, industries, and economy. The uncertainty of data storage locations is concerning.
“The Huawei local cloud guarantees the safety of your data and that of your customers. Our local cloud offers improved latency, superior services, and ensures data sovereignty for our clients,” he stated.
Additionally, Roc Bai, Vice President of Huawei Cloud Sub-Saharan Africa, presented the latest innovations from Huawei Cloud, including Huawei Cloud Stack 8.5, cloud-native databases, and advanced AI models, asserting, “We believe that a local cloud is the optimal architecture for today’s digital transformation. Enterprises require innovative solutions to tackle the challenges of industry evolution.”
The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, praised the initiative, calling it a groundbreaking achievement for Nigeria.
"Lagos State has collaborated with Huawei for some time, and today's event culminates in the launch of the Huawei Local Cloud. This represents a pivotal moment for Nigeria as we advance technologically.
"The establishment of a local cloud by Huawei is significant, as it will bolster businesses and enhance data sovereignty. I urge everyone to adopt these innovations, as they chart a transformative path for Lagos, Nigeria, and the broader African continent," he stated.
Hugo Hu, the Managing Director of Huawei Cloud Nigeria, underscored the necessity of fostering the local ecosystem.
He pointed out Huawei Cloud’s dedication to leveraging its global ecosystem and digital expertise to empower local customers and partners, enabling them to innovate and grow on an international scale.
He also introduced a three-pronged action plan: to facilitate cloud adoption for 1,000 customers, support the growth of 100 partners, and provide 5,000 developers with access to Huawei’s open resources.
In terms of developing a robust local ecosystem and nurturing talent, Huawei has been actively involved in talent training for the past 25 years.
According to the statement, the company has established two training centers in Lagos and Abuja and partnered with 137 universities to create an ICT Academy, where over 70,000 individuals receive training in various ICT fields.
"Earlier this year, Huawei Cloud initiated its startup program for Nigeria, announcing a total investment of $10 million to support 100 startups over the next two years.
"Each startup is eligible for a credit of $150,000. This investment aims to prioritize the advancement of cloud platforms, talent development, and the sharing of business resources among numerous startups," the statement concluded.
