Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) reports 134.78 million internet subscribers in October 2024, a 1.88 million increase from September 2024's 132.9 million.

Their latest industry report, released Wednesday, indicates that mobile (GSM) subscriptions account for the vast majority at 134.27 million, with the remainder attributed to fixed-line and VoIP services.

The report further notes a significant increase in internet subscriptions across all telecommunications companies except 9mobile during this period.

Specifically, MTN Nigeria saw an increase of 1.13 million internet subscribers, growing from 68.39 million in September to 69.52 million in October. Airtel followed, adding 678,219 subscribers to reach 45.47 million, up from 44.79 million.

Globacom also reported a gain of 184,887 internet subscribers, elevating its total from 16.92 million in September to 17.10 million in October. Conversely, 9mobile experienced a decline, losing 125,780 subscribers, which brought its total down from 2.29 million to 2.16 million.

Regarding telephony services, the NCC recorded a total of 157.37 million subscribers in October, reflecting an increase of 2.69 million from the previous month's figure of 154.9 million. MTN led the market with 80.37 million subscribers, followed by Airtel with 54.44 million, Globacom with 19.10 million, and 9mobile with 3.33 million.

Additionally, the NCC's data indicated that broadband penetration rose from 41.56 percent in September 2024 to 42.24 percent in October 2024.

Broadband penetration is defined as the ratio of fixed and mobile broadband subscriptions to a country's total population.

The telecommunications regulatory authority reported a rise in data consumption to 870,398.28 terabytes, exceeding the 850,249.09 terabytes recorded in September.

The commission noted usage increases across mobile generations: 2.33 percent for 5G, 46.27 percent for 4G, and 9.40 percent for 3G.
