The federation, known as PSSI, stated, "This decision was reached after extensive and thoughtful evaluations concerning the team's performance and the long-term objectives that the Indonesian National Football Team aims to achieve."
Shin, who took on the role in 2020, successfully guided Indonesia to the third round of qualification for the 2026 World Cup for the first time in history. In November, the team secured a 2-0 victory over Saudi Arabia, placing them third in their six-team group with four matches still to play.
During a press conference in Jakarta, PSSI chairman Erick Thohir, who had extended Shin's contract until 2027 last June, elaborated on the rationale behind the decision.
“The dynamics of the national team need special attention from us,” Thohir said. “We see the need for a leader who can better implement strategies agreed upon by the players, good communication and better implementation.”
No replacement has been officially announced, but there is speculation that the new leader may be from Europe.
The recent achievements of the national team can be attributed to the inclusion of players of Indonesian descent who were born and raised in Europe. Among the starting lineup in the victory against Saudi Arabia in November, only Marselino Ferdinan, who netted both goals, was born in Indonesia.
Indonesia's upcoming qualifier is scheduled against Australia in March.
