Peru's all-time top scorer, Paolo Guerrero, announced on Tuesday that he’s hanging up his boots for international football at 41.

“The national team needs new people, new faces. What people are asking for are new players, so let’s give the youngsters a chance,” Guerrero told reporters.

He kicked off his national team career against Bolivia back in October 2004 and has since racked up 40 goals in 125 matches, making him the leading scorer for Peru.

Guerrero's last appearance for the national squad was a tough 1-0 defeat to Argentina during World Cup qualifying in November.

Currently playing for Alianza Lima in Peru, he’s also had the experience of competing in six Copa America tournaments and the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
