The major U.S. company shared this news on Wednesday, emphasizing how this AI tool could transform the healthcare sector.
Tested by researchers at Stanford University and Imperial College London, this innovative tool employs advanced reasoning to help scientists sift through extensive literature and come up with new hypotheses.
AI is making its way into various fields, from handling phone calls to conducting legal research, especially after the success of ChatGPT and similar technologies over the past year.
DeepMind, Google’s AI division, has prioritized scientific advancements, and its head, Demis Hassabis, was a co-winner of a Nobel Prize in Chemistry last year for the tech developed within the unit.
In a study focused on liver fibrosis, Google noted that all the strategies proposed by its new AI co-scientist showed encouraging results and the potential to tackle disease causes.
“While this is a preliminary finding requiring further validation, it suggests a promising avenue for capable AI systems… to augment and accelerate the work of expert scientists,” the company stated.
The scientists involved in the project believe it will enhance research rather than replace it.
“We expect that it will… increase, rather than decrease scientific collaboration,” said Google scientist Vivek Natarajan.
