Weather influences nearly every aspect of daily life—from simple decisions like carrying an umbrella to critical choices such as farmers timing fertilizer application or coastal communities preparing for storms. Recognizing the need for more precise weather insights, Google has leveraged artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance short-term precipitation forecasting. Now, for the first time, these AI-powered weather predictions are being rolled out across Africa, offering unprecedented accuracy in regions where traditional radar coverage is sparse.  

High-Resolution Forecasting with MetNet

At the heart of this advancement is MetNet, Google Research’s AI-driven nowcasting model. Unlike conventional weather prediction systems that rely heavily on ground radar, MetNet uses satellite data and ground observations to generate hyperlocal forecasts. The model predicts precipitation within a 5km radius every 15 minutes for up to 12 hours, delivering results in under a minute.  

This breakthrough is particularly transformative for Africa, where ground-based weather monitoring is limited. For comparison, North America has 291 radar facilities, while Africa has only 37—a disparity that leaves vast regions without reliable weather data. By integrating satellite observations, MetNet fills these gaps, enabling accurate forecasts even in areas with minimal ground infrastructure.  

Why This Matters for Africa

1. Supporting Agriculture

Farmers depend on timely weather information to optimize planting, irrigation, and fertilizer use. Inaccurate forecasts can lead to wasted resources or crop damage if heavy rains wash away freshly applied nutrients. With AI-powered nowcasting, farmers gain precise, short-term predictions to make better-informed decisions.  

2. Protecting Coastal Communities

Many African coastal populations rely on fishing for food and income. Sudden storms can endanger lives and destroy fishing vessels. Improved nowcasting provides early warnings, helping fishermen avoid hazardous conditions.  

3. Enhancing Disaster Preparedness

From flash floods to droughts, extreme weather events are becoming more frequent. More accurate forecasts allow governments and communities to take proactive measures, reducing risks to lives and livelihoods.  

A Better Search Experience for Weather Queries

Google has now integrated these AI-driven forecasts into Search for users across Africa. When people look up weather conditions, they receive real-time, high-resolution precipitation predictions—a significant upgrade over traditional models.  

The Future of AI Weather Forecasting

Google’s teams in Accra and Nairobi are collaborating with local scientists and meteorologists to refine forecast accuracy further. The goal is to expand this technology to other radar-scarce regions, ensuring more communities benefit from reliable weather insights.  

Beyond weather prediction, Google Research Africa is working on multiple AI-driven initiatives, such as Open Buildings, which maps structures to aid in disaster response and urban planning. These efforts highlight how AI can address real-world challenges and improve resilience.
