Argentine football giants Boca Juniors have parted ways with their coach, Fernando Gago, the club announced on Tuesday. The decision comes on the heels of a painful 2-1 defeat to their fierce rivals, River Plate, in the highly anticipated Argentine Superclásico played on Sunday.

Mauricio Serna, a prominent member of Boca Juniors’ influential Football Council, formally announced Gago’s departure. Speaking to the media, Serna explained the rationale behind the decision. “We’re here to make decisions, and late last night, we found that there is no way for him to be our coach,” Serna stated. He acknowledged Gago’s dedication, saying, “We’re very grateful because he’s put in all his effort, but there are situations that have led us to make a final decision.”

The loss in the Superclásico proved to be the final straw for Gago, whose tenure had been under increasing scrutiny. This defeat compounded the disappointment of an earlier setback in the prestigious Copa Libertadores. Boca Juniors suffered an unexpected early exit from the South American club competition, falling to Peruvian side Alianza Lima. This elimination marked a historically unwelcome first for the club, as it was the first time Boca had ever been knocked out of the Copa Libertadores by a Peruvian team.

Gago, a former Real Madrid midfielder with a distinguished playing career, took the reins at Boca Juniors in October of last year. He stepped into the role after resigning from his position at Mexican club Chivas midway through their season, replacing Diego Martínez. During his time in charge of the Buenos Aires club, Gago oversaw a total of 30 matches, leading the team to 17 victories, securing five draws, and suffering eight defeats. Despite these figures, the significance of the rivalry with River Plate and the disappointment in continental competition ultimately sealed his fate at the helm of Boca Juniors. The club will now begin the search for a new manager to steer them forward.
