The announcement was a highlight of LASU’s 28th Convocation Ceremony, held recently at the Buba Marwa Auditorium on the university's Ojo campus. Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was represented at the event by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, warmly congratulated Nwosu on her exceptional academic feat and encouraged other students to strive for similar levels of excellence.
The convocation ceremony was a significant event, celebrating the graduation of 11,917 students across various academic levels. It also served as a platform for conferring awards of doctorate degrees, prestigious honorary doctorates, and the elevation to the rank of Distinguished Professorship.
Among the notable individuals honoured were Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (retd), the current Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and a former Military Administrator of Lagos State. Marwa received a Doctor of Humane Letters (Honoris Causa) in recognition of his significant contributions to infrastructure development, security enhancement, and national service.
Otunba Olufemi Pedro, a former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, was awarded a Doctor of Business (Honoris Causa) acknowledging his impactful career in banking, entrepreneurship, and contributions to national development. Furthermore, Prof. Joseph Abayomi Omoniyi Olagunju was formally recognised and elevated to the esteemed rank of Distinguished Professor.
In the governor's address, delivered by Dr. Hamzat, the critical importance of education as the bedrock of societal progress was emphasized. Governor Sanwo-Olu called upon leaders across Nigeria to continuously work towards ensuring the nation's educational system remains dynamic, relevant, and capable of addressing real-world challenges effectively. "Education is the backbone of our society," the address stated. "We must foster a culture that values knowledge and innovation just as much as success in entertainment, fashion, or sports."
The Governor reaffirmed his administration's unwavering commitment to empowering students within state-owned tertiary institutions. He highlighted strategic investments in infrastructure and student welfare as key components of developing future leaders, referencing initiatives like the Job Initiative Lagos (JIL) designed to improve the employability of final-year students under the state's overarching THEMES+ developmental agenda.
Reflecting on the large graduating class, the Governor described the convocation as more than just a ceremony; it was "a celebration of years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance" and a "launchpad into a future filled with opportunities." He also took the opportunity to commend the Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, praising her transformative leadership and innovative reforms that have significantly raised the university's profile both nationally and internationally.
Prof. Olatunji-Bello, during her own address, expressed gratitude for the consistent support LASU receives from the Lagos State Government. She shared recent successes, noting that 43 out of 44 academic programmes underwent successful accreditation during the October–November 2023 exercise. She also announced a significant academic expansion: the launch of new postgraduate diploma and master’s degree programmes under the Africa Centre of Excellence for Innovative and Transformative STEM Education (ACEITSE), which notably includes international students for the first time.
The university’s Chancellor, Prof. Gbolahan Elias (SAN), offered words of encouragement to the new graduates, congratulating them on their accomplishments and urging them to serve as exemplary ambassadors of LASU. He advised them to remain innovative, focused, and resilient as they navigate their future paths to success.
