...Gavi-Funded Men5CV Vaccine Arrives as Death Toll Rises in Northern Nigeria
In response to a deadly meningitis outbreak sweeping across northern Nigeria, the country’s Federal Ministry of Health has received over 1 million doses of the pentavalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine (Men5CV) from the Gavi-funded global stockpile. The delivery, which marks a critical step in curbing the spread of meningococcus C and W strains, comes amid a surge of over 800 reported cases and more than 70 fatalities spanning 23 states.
The Men5CV vaccine—recently approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2023—provides protection against five major meningococcal serogroups, a major leap in disease prevention across Africa’s meningitis belt.
Vaccination Drive Begins in High-Risk States
The first wave of the vaccination campaign is targeting individuals aged 1 to 29, the demographic most affected by the outbreak. The initial deployment will focus on Kebbi and Sokoto States, with Yobe State next in line once more vaccine doses arrive.
This urgent health response is timely, as Nigeria enters the peak of its meningitis season, which runs from December to June—when dry air, high dust levels, and low humidity make populations particularly vulnerable to infection.
Government Reaffirms Commitment to Health Security
“This is a crucial milestone in Nigeria’s response to the current meningitis outbreak,” said Dr. Muhammad Ali Pate, Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health & Social Welfare. “It reflects our commitment under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to protect the well-being of all Nigerians—especially our children and young people, who are most at risk.”
Dr. Pate emphasized that the vaccine’s arrival is aligned with Nigeria’s Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative, which prioritizes epidemic preparedness and rapid response as pillars of national health security.
Global Support Bolsters Local Action
The emergency vaccine doses were approved by the International Coordinating Group (ICG) on Vaccine Provision following Nigeria’s official request in March 2025. The ICG manages global vaccine stockpiles for outbreaks of diseases such as cholera, yellow fever, and meningitis, with UNICEF overseeing the delivery and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, providing funding and logistical support.
Francisco Luquero, Gavi’s Head of High-Impact Outbreaks, noted, “With Gavi's support, vaccines successfully eliminated meningitis A in Africa. Now, Men5CV is expanding that progress by addressing additional deadly strains. Continued investment is crucial to safeguarding this progress and preventing future epidemics.”
The Burden of Meningitis in Africa
Meningococcal meningitis, an infection of the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord, remains a serious health threat in Africa’s “meningitis belt”—which spans 26 countries from Senegal to Ethiopia and includes 500 million people at risk. The disease most commonly affects infants, children, and young adults, with one in four survivors facing lasting disabilities such as hearing loss, seizures, and cognitive impairments.
Looking Toward 2030: Elimination Within Reach
UNICEF Nigeria Country Representative Cristian Munduate emphasized the vaccine's importance in both controlling the current outbreak and building long-term resilience: “Every child deserves protection from life-threatening diseases like meningitis. This vaccination campaign is a critical step toward that goal.”
Dr. Walter Kazadi Mulombo, WHO Country Representative, added that the vaccine’s arrival underscores the power of international collaboration: “The Men5CV vaccine not only supports today’s response but also lays a foundation for future prevention efforts.”
Since its global deployment began in 2024, Men5CV has been used in outbreak response, routine immunization transitions, and preventive mass campaigns across the region. Nigeria became the first country to receive Men5CV from the global stockpile, marking a historic moment in the fight against meningitis.
