In anticipation of the influx of visitors arriving this weekend for the games, which are scheduled to commence on Friday, May 16th, at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta, significant renovations are underway at key attractions, ranging from the iconic Olumo Rock to the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) and various sporting venues throughout the state. Notably, Olumo Rock, a prominent landmark in Abeokuta, has been temporarily closed to facilitate these enhancements.
Iconic Landmarks Primed for Visitors
Olumo Rock, renowned for its historical and cultural significance as well as its panoramic views of Abeokuta, is undergoing extensive renovations to ensure it meets the expectations of the anticipated visitors. Similarly, the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), dedicated to the life and presidency of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, is also receiving attention. Beyond its archival significance, OOPL features a park dedicated to wildlife viewing and conservation initiatives, offering a diverse experience for tourists.
Beyond these major attractions, cities and towns across Ogun State, including Abeokuta, Ijebu-Ode, Sagamu, Ota, Ibafo, and Agbara, offer glimpses into the state's rich cultural heritage and local way of life. Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has affirmed the state's commitment to providing top-class tourist facilities for all those visiting for the Gateway Games.
"We planned to shut down most of our tourist centres to put them in good shape for the games. We are not just hosting, but we also want to showcase our rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality to all our visitors. We aim to host one of the best sports festivals, hoping it will positively impact our economy as well," Governor Abiodun stated.
