Chinese Battery Giant to Electrify Maersk's Container Handling Equipment, Boost Recycling
Chinese electric vehicle (EV) battery behemoth Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) announced on Wednesday a strategic partnership with APM Terminals, a subsidiary of Danish shipping giant Maersk. This collaboration aims to accelerate the energy transition within the global logistics industry, focusing on the development and after-sales support of advanced battery products for container handling equipment.
The newly expanded strategic deal, signed today, will see CATL provide high-performance batteries and comprehensive system-level solutions to APM Terminals. The primary goal is to electrify equipment such as electric terminal tractors, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions across port operations.
Beyond the initial deployment of battery technology, the partnership encompasses the full lifecycle of these advanced batteries. This includes robust after-sales support and, crucially, battery recycling initiatives. CATL will share best practices and optimization strategies to minimize the environmental footprint throughout the battery's lifespan, directly supporting APM Terminals' Scope 3 decarbonization objectives.
This collaboration is a significant step towards greener maritime logistics. Both companies are members of the Zero Emission Port Alliance (ZEPA), and this partnership is expected to further accelerate the adoption of battery-electric solutions, contributing to a more sustainable future for port terminals worldwide.
