Singer Opens Up About Debilitating Health Condition and Why He Chose to Keep Performing
Justin Timberlake has opened up about a private health struggle that’s been affecting him behind the scenes: Lyme disease. In a candid Instagram post, the pop star revealed that he had been diagnosed with the tick-borne illness, which he says has had a serious impact on his physical and mental well-being — particularly while on tour.
The Grammy-winning artist, whose Forget Tomorrow world tour launched in April 2024, chose to speak out after months of public speculation surrounding his onstage performances. “I’ve been battling some health issues and was diagnosed with Lyme disease,” Timberlake wrote. “Not for sympathy—but to shed light on what I’ve been up against.”
A Hidden Struggle Behind the Spotlight
Timberlake’s statement follows a year-long tour in support of his album Everything I Thought It Was. While the tour has been commercially successful—earning him the No. 10 spot on Billboard’s midyear Boxscore chart with $73.2 million grossed across 41 shows—fans had noticed signs of fatigue and uncharacteristic performance dips, prompting concern and, in some cases, criticism online.
The singer acknowledged those concerns, saying that before his diagnosis, he himself was confused by what he was experiencing. “I would be on stage and in a massive amount of nerve pain or just feeling crazy fatigue or sickness,” he explained. “When I first got the diagnosis, I was shocked for sure. But at least I could understand why.”
Rather than step back from the spotlight, Timberlake chose to continue touring. “I was faced with a personal decision. Stop touring? Or keep going and figure it out. I decided the joy that performing brings me far outweighs the fleeting stress my body was feeling.”
Choosing Transparency Over Silence
Timberlake admitted that being open about personal health struggles didn’t come easily to him. “I was always raised to keep something like this to yourself,” he said. “But I am trying to be more transparent about my struggles so that they aren’t misinterpreted.”
His honesty was met with an overwhelming wave of support from fans. Comments on his social media post praised his courage and commitment. “You are so loved,” one fan wrote. “We’ll be here supporting whatever you decide to do next.”
A Rising Health Concern in the US
Lyme disease, primarily contracted through the bite of an infected tick, is increasingly prevalent in parts of the United States. In recent years, climate change and warmer temperatures have contributed to a rise in tick populations, with 2025 seeing the highest number of ER visits for tick bites during May and June since 2019, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The illness can cause a wide range of symptoms—from rashes and fever to long-term fatigue and nerve pain. Recovery may take months or even years, and in severe cases, it can be deeply debilitating. Other artists who have gone public with their experiences include Avril Lavigne, Shania Twain, and Justin Bieber.
A Legacy Beyond the Music
Timberlake’s journey began over three decades ago when he appeared on The All-New Mickey Mouse Club in the early '90s, alongside fellow future stars Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. He rose to global fame with boy band *NSync and launched a highly successful solo career in 2002.
Now, amid his continued musical success, Timberlake is adding a new chapter to his legacy—one marked by resilience, openness, and advocacy.
As he continues to tour and create, Timberlake says the experience has changed his perspective. “I proved my mental tenacity to myself,” he said. “And I now have so many special moments with all of you that I will never forget.”
