Super Falcons defender, Michelle Alozie, has expressed her joy following Nigeria’s hard-fought 2-1 victory over South Africa in the semi-final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), while also extending compassion to an injured rival player.
Victory Sealed, Eyes on the Final
The match, played Tuesday evening at Stade Larbi Zaouli, saw Nigeria edge out defending champions Banyana Banyana to book their place in this weekend’s final.
Goals from Rasheedat Ajibade and Michelle Alozie powered the Falcons past South Africa in what was widely seen as a clash between tournament heavyweights.
Reacting after the game, Alozie took to her social media handle to share her excitement, posting:
“COUNT IT!!!!! See you in the finals.”
Class Beyond the Pitch
Beyond the celebrations, Alozie also demonstrated sportsmanship and empathy by sending prayers to Gabriela Salgado, the South African midfielder who suffered a serious injury during the encounter.
“Prayers to Gabriela Salgado. Speedy recovery,” Alozie added in a follow-up post.
Salgado's injury was one of the game's low points, casting a shadow over what was otherwise a thrilling display of African women’s football.

Nigeria Awaits Final Opponent

With this victory, the Super Falcons march into the WAFCON final, where they will face the winner of the second semi-final between Morocco and Ghana.
Nigeria, Africa’s most successful women’s football team, will be looking to reclaim the title from South Africa, who won the previous edition of the tournament.
The final is scheduled for this weekend, with expectations running high as the Falcons aim to add another continental crown to their decorated legacy.
