Lagos recently played host to a milestone celebration as Bluebird Communications Limited marked its 30th anniversary, commemorating three decades of innovation, resilience, and purposeful storytelling in Nigeria’s marketing and advertising industry.

Founded in 1995, Bluebird began as a modest creative agency with an ambitious vision: to tell authentic African stories, bridge the gap between brands and their audiences, and deliver marketing solutions with speed, creativity, and precision. That vision has remained central to the company’s identity, even as it has grown into a fully integrated marketing communications group with expertise spanning digital strategy, media planning and buying, experiential marketing, brand activation, and public relations.

Speaking at the anniversary press briefing and luncheon, themed “30 and Vibing”, Chairman of Bluebird Communications, Femi Olubanwo, reflected on the agency’s journey from its humble beginnings.

“Thirty years ago, Bluebird Communications Limited began as a small creative agency with a bold dream… From those humble beginnings, we have grown into a fully integrated marketing communications group,” Olubanwo said. “Along the way, we’ve partnered with Nigeria’s most respected brands, helped challenger brands become household names, and supported small businesses to grow into major players. Our campaigns have sparked conversations, influenced behavior, and built lasting loyalty.”

The agency’s evolution has been shaped by close collaboration with clients, media partners, and other stakeholders. Olubanwo credited these relationships as the foundation for the company’s sustained growth and relevance in a competitive industry.

For Executive Chairman, Kunle Ogunmefun, the 30-year milestone is also a testament to perseverance in the face of adversity. He recounted the company’s inception on July 7, 1995, when operations began from a one-room rented office in Onikan, Lagos, amid a difficult economic climate under Nigeria’s military regime.

“We started Bluebird during a very hostile and harsh economic environment,” Ogunmefun said. “Nigeria was then a pariah state, businesses were closing, and international investors were pulling out. Many thought it was crazy to start a business at that time. But we were dogged, stayed focused, and held on to our dream. Thirty years later, we give glory to God for our growth and contributions to our clients, the advertising industry, and Nigeria’s GDP.”

From navigating the uncertainties of the 1990s to embracing the opportunities of the digital era, Bluebird’s journey reflects both adaptability and an enduring commitment to creative excellence. As it celebrates this milestone, the agency looks ahead to the future with renewed purpose, confident in its ability to shape brand narratives that resonate across Africa and beyond.
