Google introduces New Gemini App Feature that Lets You Turn Ideas, Photos, and Drawings into Custom Nigerian Storybooks
New ‘Storybook’ feature turns simple prompts and personal images into unique, narrated stories.
In a move that blends Nigeria’s rich oral traditions with cutting-edge AI, Google has launched Storybook, a new feature within its Gemini app that allows users to create short, illustrated, and narrated stories using their own photos, drawings, or prompts.
With over 39 million Nigerian children under the age of six, the demand for engaging, accessible educational content is more pressing than ever. Storybook seeks to meet that need by turning everyday moments—like a child’s doodle or a family photo—into vibrant, personalized learning experiences.
“In a country with such a vibrant history of passing down knowledge through stories, Storybook feels like a natural evolution,” said Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Communications & Public Affairs Manager for Google in West Africa. “It addresses a real need for parents and educators who are looking for fresh ways to captivate the minds of our youngest learners.”
The process is simple: users describe a story and optionally upload an image—such as a photo of a child and their favorite toy, or a drawing they’ve made. Gemini then generates a 10-page illustrated story, complete with narration. Whether it’s a bedtime adventure starring your child or an imaginative tale inspired by a crayon sketch, the result is a personalized book that’s as entertaining as it is educational.
The feature is designed not only to support early childhood learning but also to foster creativity, self-expression, and cultural storytelling in the digital age. Parents can craft stories to explain complex ideas in child-friendly ways, while teachers might use it to reinforce classroom lessons or celebrate student work.
“Storytelling is fundamental to how we connect and learn,” Kola-Ogunlade explained. “The interesting part isn't the AI; it's the personal expression it enables. A father can explain his job to his daughter by turning his resume into an adventure, or a family can relive a holiday through a new story. It’s a canvas for those small, personal moments that are the foundation of early education.”
Beyond the classroom and home, Storybook also opens creative opportunities for personalized gifts, family bonding, and preserving cultural narratives. For example, a grandparent might help a child visualize old folktales with a modern twist, creating a bridge between generations.
