Davido had earlier confirmed that he and his wife, Chioma Avril Rowland, would hold their white wedding ceremony in Miami, Florida, this August. The announcement was made during his appearance on The Breakfast Club radio show back in April.
While the ceremony is expected to be a high-profile family celebration, the governor’s absence from the state has drawn sharp criticism from the Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which questioned the governor's extended absence and alleged lack of transparency.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Governor Adeleke’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, confirmed the governor’s travel, stating it was a private trip aboard the family’s private jet to support Davido during what he described as a significant family occasion.
“Governor Adeleke left Nigeria for the United States a few days ago for the wedding of the global music icon, his beloved nephew, David Adeleke,” Rasheed said, adding, “His Excellency is extending an invitation to the opposition party to attend the event and share in the joy of the occasion with the Adeleke family. Those unable to attend may join virtually.”
Rasheed also emphasized that Adeleke had not taken any official vacation since assuming office in November 2022, and reassured the public that the trip would be brief.
“For this current trip, the Governor has again chosen to make it a short one to continually attend to crucial state functions. Meanwhile, the Governor is in constant communication with his deputy, Prince Kola Adewusi, who is supervising activities of the government,” the statement added.
Despite this clarification, the Osun APC expressed dissatisfaction, accusing the governor of leaving without formally transmitting power to his deputy as required by constitutional convention.
In a statement signed by APC spokesperson Kola Olabisi, the party questioned the secrecy surrounding the governor’s movements and the lack of an official handover.
“The question being asked in hushed tones in some public places, inside commercial buses and by motorcycle riders and their passengers in the state is: where could be the whereabouts of their governor for this long?” the APC said.
“Did the governor duly transmit power to his deputy who is constitutionally covered to temporarily step into the shoes of his principal in his absence?”
The controversy highlights the ongoing tensions between the Adeleke administration and the opposition in Osun State, even as the governor seeks to balance family commitments with his public office responsibilities.
