Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade has offered a powerful glimpse into her inspirational journey from a modest upbringing to becoming one of Africa’s most celebrated female footballers, urging young Nigerians not to give up on their dreams.
The Atletico Madrid star, who led Nigeria to a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco, shared her testimony on Saturday at the August edition of the “Power Must Change Hands” programme held at the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries’ (MFM) Prayer City in Ogun State.
From Church Grounds to Continental Champion
Speaking before a large congregation, Ajibade reflected on her early years when she hustled to support her family by selling local drinks like kunu and zobo, along with items like Olive oil, within church premises during deliverance services.
“I was once one of those young girls out there hawking Olive oil, kunu, and zobo drinks in most of the deliverance programmes,” she recalled. “But today, I give glory to God.”
Now a continental champion and team leader on the pitch, Ajibade’s story is a striking example of perseverance, discipline, and spiritual conviction. She credited her success not only to hard work and talent but also to a consistent prayer life.
“Whenever things are tough at my club or with the national team, I pray,” she said. “I do my part through hard work but never forget to seek God’s help.”
Spiritual Discipline and Sporting Excellence
Ajibade, a devout Christian and product of MFM FC’s grassroots football system, used the opportunity to encourage fellow believers and young aspiring athletes to remain steadfast in faith and commitment, regardless of their circumstances.
“Please, don’t give up. Keep praying, keep fasting, keep working, and keep believing,” she urged.
Her emotional account resonated deeply, especially coming from a player who not only captained Nigeria to WAFCON glory but was also named Player of the Tournament, earning three Woman of the Match awards in the process. Although she scored just once in the competition, her all-round leadership, creativity, and work ethic made her one of the standout performers of the tournament.
More Than Just a Testimony
Ajibade’s story highlights the potential of Nigerian youth when nurtured with opportunity, faith, and focus. Her rise from selling homemade drinks at church to lifting a continental trophy is more than a personal victory—it's a beacon of hope for young girls dreaming of greatness, both on and off the field.
As Nigeria continues to celebrate her achievements, Rasheedat Ajibade stands not just as a footballer, but as a symbol of resilience, faith, and the power of never giving up.
