In a match that remained tightly contested for most of the 90 minutes, the breakthrough came in the 75th minute. Senegalese midfielder Serigne Koite capitalised on a defensive lapse at the edge of Nigeria's penalty area, drawing the goalkeeper out of position before unselfishly laying off a pass to Christian Gomis, who tapped in what would be the game’s only goal.
This was the first-ever CHAN meeting between the West African giants, and both teams showed moments of quality and discipline. However, Senegal’s superior sharpness in the final third ultimately made the difference.
Congo Spoil Sudan’s Party with Late Equaliser
In the second Group A match of the day, Congo fought back to secure a 1-1 draw against a talented Sudan side, who were favourites going into the fixture.
Musa Ali Hussein, the teenage sensation from Al Merrikh, lit up the match with a brilliant solo goal in the 29th minute. The 18-year-old forward dribbled past two Congolese defenders before unleashing a clinical right-footed finish from the left edge of the box.
Despite dominating large portions of the match, Sudan were made to pay for a late lapse in concentration. In the 86th minute, Congo’s substitute Carly Ekongo found himself unmarked in the box and made no mistake in punishing the error, lashing home the equaliser to earn his team a valuable point.
Group A Outlook
With their opening win, Senegal top the group on three points, while Congo and Sudan share a point apiece. Nigeria, who will be under pressure heading into their next game, are rooted to the bottom of the table with no points.
The CHAN tournament, reserved exclusively for players active in their domestic leagues, continues to provide a platform for emerging talent to showcase their skills on the continental stage.
Senegal will next face Congo, while Nigeria take on Sudan in what could already be a must-win encounter for both teams.
