Ezeakor, 20, burst into national prominence earlier this year when he clinched gold in the men’s 100 metres final at the 2024 National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, running a then-personal best of 10.27 seconds. His victory at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in May cemented his status as one of Nigeria’s most promising young sprinters.
The final was not without drama — Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Favour Ashe was disqualified before the start for failing to wear complete bibs, leaving the field open for Ezeakor to seize the moment. He powered past a competitive line-up, with Olympic finalist Enoch Adegoke settling for silver.
Since then, the Edo State-born athlete has maintained impressive form throughout the 2025 season. At the Nigerian Championships in Yaba on August 1, he set a new personal best of 10.25 seconds in the heats before advancing to the finals. He also anchored Team Nigeria to victory in the men’s 4×100 metres relay, clocking 40.08 seconds.
Ezeakor’s season highlights include multiple heat wins at the MTN CHAMPS Grand Final in Uyo and the AFN/DYNAMIC Athletics Meet in Lagos, consistently posting sub-10.40-second performances under legal wind conditions. He has also shown versatility, recording a season’s best of 21.30 seconds in the 200 metres at the MTN CHAMPS Continental Relays in Lagos.
These consistent displays caught the eye of Iowa’s coaching staff, who see in Ezeakor not just raw speed but also valuable relay experience and the potential to excel across multiple sprint events. His arrival is expected to add both depth and competitive edge to the Hawkeyes’ sprint squad.
With the 2025 track season on the horizon, Ezeakor will have the chance to test himself against elite NCAA competition in both indoor and outdoor meets — an opportunity that could further elevate his career on the international stage.
