Webek Studios has completed its debut feature-length film, Abeni, a project inspired by an oral tradition recounting the courage of a young woman who defied societal expectations to pursue the craft of forging within the deeply rooted structures of Yoruba culture.
Directed by the studio’s CEO, Esse Akwawa, and co-directed and co-written by Samuel Olasehinde, the film was shot at Africhatta Film Village in Oyo State—an environment recognised for its commitment to authentic Yoruba representation. The narrative follows Abeni, a young woman whose determination leads her to challenge gender norms by entering a field historically reserved for men. Her story, passed down informally through generations yet never formally documented, blends ancestral memory with personal struggle, exploring themes of resilience, identity, and cultural defiance.
The project is further supported by Co-Executive Producers Seun Dania and Ibrahim Chatta, who helped expand the film’s scale and cultural grounding. According to Akwawa, Abeni represents more than a cinematic achievement; it is “a resurrection of a forgotten story,” honouring women whose histories were seldom recorded. He notes that the film aims to reintroduce a narrative that speaks to the bravery and sacrifice embedded in Yoruba heritage.
Chatta echoed this sentiment, describing the project as an opportunity to reconnect with stories reflecting ancestral strength. He emphasised that Abeni’s journey underscores the power of passion and the significance of spotlighting undocumented histories within contemporary cinema.
The film is powered by CcHub in partnership with Africa No Filter and supported by the Gates Foundation, aligning with broader initiatives that promote gender-equitable storytelling across the continent.
