A new benchmark in radio audience engagement has been set as Yanga FM, Nigeria’s leading urban-pidgin radio station, awarded N1 million to one of its listeners—an unprecedented gesture in the country’s broadcast industry.
The reward came through the station’s One Million Giveaway Campaign, an initiative created to celebrate listener loyalty and strengthen interactive participation across its growing audience base. Media analysts say the move reflects a rising trend in radio stations adopting experiential campaigns to deepen brand connection.
The winner, Emedoh Okwunna Alloysius, secured the top prize after successfully answering questions about Yanga FM’s programmes. His announcement was made live during the station’s flagship show, “The Wetin Dey Show,” where the atmosphere reportedly shifted from suspense to jubilation as the correct answers were confirmed.
Speaking after the broadcast, Alloysius said he was “overwhelmed” by the win and expressed gratitude to the station. He revealed that he plans to invest the money in a business venture, though he is still considering which sector to enter.
First Live Call-In Since Launch Adds to the Milestone
The giveaway also marked another significant moment for Yanga FM. Since the station began broadcasting in March, this was the first time listener phone calls were taken live on air, adding an extra layer of excitement to the campaign finale. The interactive segment allowed real-time reactions from callers and further showcased the station’s commitment to engaging its audience in innovative ways.
Station executives say the success of the One Million Giveaway underscores Yanga FM’s mission to reflect everyday Nigerian realities through pidgin-led programming while fostering a vibrant, participatory listener community.
As the station continues to expand its reach, observers note that the breakthrough promotion could influence how other broadcasters design audience-reward campaigns in the months ahead.
