The track, released on November 13, delivers a radiant blend of Afropop, Calypso, and Highlife—an upbeat fusion carried by Alade’s unmistakable vocals and dynamic performance style. Bright, rhythmic, and deliberately playful, the song marks a confident re-entry by the Afropop star as she gears up for an ambitious year ahead.
“Shawa Shawa” arrives at the end of a landmark 2025 for the singer, who earned a solo GRAMMY nomination, appeared on the covers of Forbes Africa and OkayAfrica, and added several chart-toppers to her catalogue, including “Worry” featuring Fave, “My Padi,” and “Mbali.” This year also saw her expand into entrepreneurship with the launch of her cosmetics line, Yem Beauty.
The new single serves as the first official step toward Alade’s seventh studio album, slated for release in 2026, and precedes her second global tour in less than three years.
Produced by Grammy-nominated collaborator DeeYasso, “Shawa Shawa” pairs its dance-ready rhythms with thoughtful storytelling. Alade uses humour and social commentary to explore themes of morality, cultural norms, and societal perceptions, weaving them into a celebratory soundscape.
“Life happens all around us every day and this song merely just touches on the oldest profession in the world,” Alade said, explaining the track’s inspiration. “‘Shawa Shawa’ takes you back to the basics of celebrating the roots of African culture. Many stories have been told through this medium and that was exactly my goal when I wrote this song.”
With its catchy hooks and colourful production, the single reinforces Alade’s reputation as one of the continent’s most expressive and influential pop storytellers.
Widely regarded as the leading female Afropop artist in Africa, Yemi Alade—affectionately known as Mama Africa—has amassed more than one billion global streams and a decorated career that includes six acclaimed albums and hits such as “Johnny,” “Baddie,” and “Tomorrow.” She is a GRAMMY winner for her collaboration with Angélique Kidjo and has earned multiple BET, MOBO, and MTV Africa Music Awards.
Beyond her music, Alade serves as a United Nations ambassador and supports philanthropic work through the James and Helen PathWay Foundation.
