The holiday season brought moviegoers back to theaters in droves, sending James Cameron’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash” to the top of the box office and giving Timothée Chalamet’s ping-pong dramedy “Marty Supreme” a promising start.

‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Leads

Cameron’s sci-fi spectacle earned $24 million on Christmas Day, maintaining its No. 1 spot. The film, which opened to $88 million last week, is projected to earn $75–80 million over the four-day Christmas weekend. While slightly behind the holiday opening of “Avatar: The Way of Water” ($29 million on Christmas 2022), “Fire and Ash” is expected to hold strong through the end of the year, helping offset its massive production and marketing costs—$350 million to produce and $150 million to promote.

So far, the threequel has made $153 million domestically and $544 million globally, and its performance over the holiday weekend could bring it closer to the billion-dollar mark set by its predecessors.

Marty Supreme’ Serves a Winning Debut

Josh Safdie’s “Marty Supreme” debuted with a $9.5 million Christmas Day, landing in second place. Following a record-breaking limited release—earning $875,000 from six theaters, the best per-screen average of the year for A24—the film is expected to surpass $20 million over the holiday weekend.

Chalamet’s star power, combined with eye-catching promotional stunts (like appearing atop the Las Vegas Sphere and flying a giant orange blimp), has helped the film generate buzz. The comedy-drama, which cost $70 million, could become A24’s biggest box office opening if it continues to ride positive reviews and word-of-mouth momentum. The current record-holder is Alex Garland’s “Warfare”, which opened to $25.7 million in April 2025.

Other Holiday Releases

Sony’s disaster comedy “Anaconda”, starring Paul Rudd and Jack Black, claimed third place with a $9.1 million Christmas Day and is projected to earn $22–24 million over the weekend, slightly above its $45 million budget.

Disney’s “Zootopia 2” opened in fourth place with $5.2 million, while Focus Features’ musical “Song Sung Blue” earned $4.4 million, on track for a $12 million opening against a $30 million budget. Lionsgate’s thriller “The Housemaid”, starring Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney, brought in $3.5 million.

Looking Ahead

With the holidays in full swing, box office watchers will be keeping an eye on “Fire and Ash” to see if it can maintain momentum and continue to compete with high-profile releases like “Marty Supreme.” Early indicators suggest audiences are eager for both blockbuster spectacle and quirky, star-driven storytelling, setting the stage for a dynamic post-Christmas weekend at the theaters.
